In what has been an extraordinary week for Ireland we would like to share a message from a consultant respiratory paediatrician at cork university hospital:
I hope you all stay safe during this difficult time . The children will get through this no problem . Paediatric hospitals are empty in Italy at present after 3 weeks of school closure as the usual viruses stopped circulating . Remember with corona children are vectors not victims . In most epidemics young children are the transmitters . Therefore for school closure to be effective it’s really important that the kids aren’t mixing with other kids while out of school . They will give it to each other silently pass it on to our loved ones. What we do now will contribute to how this develops in cork . Avoid situations that the children will interact . If the community respond to this it will shut it down more than anything we do in hospital . From my experiences in the hospital this last week I would say that corona virus is closer to all of us than we realise and the degrees of separation for all of us is getting narrower . I’m not that good at social media but if this could be shared as widely as possible with parents in cork it will help. This messsge needs to go viral to stop the virus .

Dr Cotter was part of the great Douglas Street Committee who organised an Autumn Festival last Sunday. The sun shone all day, lots of entertainment and happy faces. Well done to all!!
On 6th February 2019, hundreds of GPs from every part of Ireland held a mass protest outside Dáil Éireann. Dr Rachel Finnegan was there to represent Langford Hall Medical Centre staff and patients.
The National Association of General Practitioners (NAGP) organised the protest to tell the government “enough is enough” on lack of funding and contract negotiations. Dr Maitiú Ó Tuathail, NAGP president, said there were 26 communities across the country currently without a GP and this would “escalate dramatically”.
He said about 700 GPs were due to retire in the next five years and 70 per cent of practices outside Dublin were not taking on any new patients as they were at capacity. The number of doctors who can no longer take on any more patients is a growing crisis. The medical card system can no longer cope, having been starved of resources. Not enough new doctors are being appointed by the State to serve the public and many are having to retire early, due to burnout. GPs are at, and many have passed, breaking point.
Evidence from around the world confirms that community based health systems, like the family doctor system, are the most efficient, safe and effective. Our politicians are not listening and bizarrely this government insist on doing the complete opposite. Years of successive cuts in Government funding for general practice has created an inefficient unstructured health system which is now collapsing.
Also, promised extra investment in developing the GP service has not been delivered, so that it is healthy and sustainable for the future. Your public representatives need to be held to account for this grave failure. We would also welcome your support in raising these issues next time you see your local politicians.
The future survival of the GP service is vital, to enable it to serve you, your family members and friends who use it. This issue is affecting whole communities all around Ireland.
