Today is National Cancer Survivors Day.

It's a day to honour people living with and beyond cancer, to celebrate life, and to recognise the scientific progress that has made survival possible for so many.

Here in Ireland, more than 220,700 people have faced and survived a cancer diagnosis.

Today is a moment to celebrate every survivor, while also recognising that life after cancer can bring ongoing physical, emotional, financial and practical challenges.

National Cancer Survivors Day is also a reminder of why research matters.

For all of us at Breakthrough Cancer Research it is a promise to keep pushing science forward, so that every breakthrough reaches more cancer types, more treatment options, and more people waiting for hope.

As we celebrate survivors of cancer today, we reaffirm our commitment to creating a future where cancer is a survivable disease for everyone.

Together, let’s build a future where 100% of people survive 100% of cancers.

Keep believing. Keep advocating. Keep helping to .

A huge thank you to every member of Team Breakthrough who laced up their runners and took on the Vhi Women's Mini Marathon and Cork City Marathon last weekend.

We are truly blown away by your support and so sincerely grateful to everyone who pounded the streets of Dublin and Cork while raising vital funds for cancer research. Many of you took part to honour a loved one, remember someone special, or support a family member or friend affected by cancer. Every step you took is helping to fund research into new, better, kinder, smarter and more effective treatments for people with cancer.

It has been a privilege to hear your stories, learn what inspired you to take part, and support you along the way. We cannot thank you enough for your dedication, enthusiasm and generosity. Because of you, researchers across Ireland can continue their work to find new discoveries and bring hope to people with cancer and their families.

From all of us at Breakthrough Cancer Research - thank you 💙🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️

‘Today's breakthrough started years ago.’

This week, at ASCO- American Society of Clinical Oncology, researchers announced encouraging results from a personalised cancer vaccine trial in people with advanced melanoma.

Unlike traditional vaccines, this approach is designed specifically for each individual.

By analysing a person's tumour, researchers identified unique cancer targets and trained the immune system to recognise and attack them.

Five years after treatment, 70% of people who received the vaccine remained cancer free, compared with 49% who received standard treatment alone.

Speaking on Newstalk’s Claire Byrne Show, our CEO Orla Dolan, explained why findings like these are so exciting, and why they are the culmination of years of scientific discovery, research investment and innovation.

Today's breakthrough began many years ago in the laboratory. That's why research matters.

Every promising treatment. Every new technology. Every improvement in survival.
It all starts with research.

Members of the public recently had the opportunity to step behind the laboratory doors at the Bernal Institute and the Limerick Digital Cancer Research Centre at the University of Limerick.

Across six interactive stations, visitors explored the full journey of cancer research, including:
🧪 Testing new therapies
🧬 3D bioprinting
💻 Computational biology
⚙️ Medical devices

Along the way, they met the researchers, clinicians, engineers and patient advocates working together to better understand cancer and develop new approaches to its diagnosis and treatment.

The showcase highlighted how collaboration across disciplines is driving new discoveries and bringing us closer to new, better, smarter, kinder and more effective treatments and diagnostics for people with cancer.

A huge thank you to all the researchers, staff and visitors who made the event such a success.Together, we are bringing people closer to the impact of research and helping to .

Cancer jab can eradicate entire tumours in patients, trial shows 30/05/2026

We are delighted to see Professor Kevin Harrington's latest research attracting international attention and to hear that the presentation of these promising new clinical trial results will be presented in Chicago at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) tomorrow.

The findings suggest that a novel triple-action treatment, amivantamab, may offer new hope for people with advanced head and neck cancers whose disease has stopped responding to existing treatments. Early results showed significant tumour responses in a group of people with very limited treatment options.

Professor Harrington is a member of Breakthrough Cancer Research's International Scientific Advisory Committee, and we are proud to see his continued leadership helping to advance new, smarter and more effective approaches to cancer treatment.

This is another powerful reminder of why investment in world-class cancer research matters.

Congratulations to Professor Harrington and all involved in this important international collaboration. 👏

“No tan is worth this.”

Behind every statistic is a person, a family, and a life changed forever.

As proud members of the Coalition Against Sunbeds, Breakthrough Cancer Research is supporting calls for a total ban on sunbeds in Ireland.

Gill's powerful story is a reminder that melanoma is not just one of the fastest rising cancers in Ireland, it is also one of the most preventable.

Research continues to improve how we understand, diagnose and treat cancer. Prevention remains one of the most effective ways to reduce cancer risk in the first place.

We encourage everyone to watch, share, and help raise awareness.
