A top 10 list of favorite books can only ever be a snapshot. Write it on a gloomy, grey Tuesday and it looks one way. Write it under a clear blue sky, and everything changes.
The Guardian recently dropped its Top 100 novels but reading is all about timing, mood, and emotional need. So, right now here is my definitive (for today) Top 10:
1️⃣ Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy by John Le Carré – A dark, intellectual masterclass in tension and the futility of espionage. 2️⃣ Small Things Like These by Claire Keegan – A beautiful, intense novella meditating on kindness against a backdrop of institutional cruelty. 3️⃣ The End of the Affair by Graham Greene – Pristine, powerful prose exploring love, hate, and obsession through a wonderfully flawed hero. 4️⃣ The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson – A flawless thriller featuring the unforgettable, fierce Lisbeth Salander. 5️⃣ Brooklyn by Colm Toibin – A bittersweet, beautifully balanced story of love, immigration, and identity. 6️⃣ Orbital by Samantha Harvey – A lyrical, Booker Prize-winning look at the minutiae of life on a space station and our love for the planet. 7️⃣ Intimacies by Katie Kitamura – An immersive, intimate story about a war crimes interpreter questioning how we truly connect with others. 8️⃣ Hangover Square by Patrick Hamilton – A claustrophobic, richly written study of desperation and dark London streets on the brink of WWII. 9️⃣ Breakfast at Tiffany’s by Truman Capote – A rhythmic, sharp masterpiece about the power, charm, and cruelty of reinvention in Manhattan. 🔟 Far From The Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy – A wicked critique of 1870s social mores wrapped in sensual, breathtaking nature writing.
Hovering just outside the list today: The Great Gatsby, The Handmaid’s Tale, Girl A, and Money (which might make the cut on a sunnier day!). ☀️

AUDIOBOOK REVIEW: The End of the Affair by Graham Greene 25/04/2026

Michael Kitchen narrates this exquisitely downbeat book set against the backdrop of a war torn London. Its universal themes of lust, hate and pain still resonate today. Find out more in my review.

No Accounting For Taste 10/02/2026

45 years ago one of the greatest records ever made was held off the number one spot in the UK chart by a novelty song. How did Vienna come second to Shaddap You Face? A story that takes in Aliens, John Lennon and Woolworths.

REVIEW: Famous Once by Jane Green. 08/02/2026

On paper Famous Once by Jane Green has so many of the elements I love in a story; A supermodel. A rock star. 1970s London. S*x, drugs, rock and roll and a mysterious unsolved death.
It should be dangerous, sexy and a little bit grubby but instead, it plays it safe.
Check out my review and let me know what you thought.
