At Wildacres it is very much a team effort and it would not be possible to do what we do, without the invaluable help of our kind and wonderful volunteers💚💚 We are very grateful 🙏

There is so much work to do to bring back our decimated biodiversity.

Days like this definitely restore our faith in humanity.

To meet people working quietly and tirelessly to reverse the massive damage wreaked on our natural world.

Proving that it can be restored!

Scorched Earth! 🥵

It seems senseless that mowers are still ‘out and about’ after weeks of drought.

The first image is a glaring example of obsession with cutting and mowing outdoor spaces.

The manicured lawn and green is an outdated concept which originated in the 1700s on grand Anglo-Irish estates.

These shorn spaces could be havens for nature, but instead, due to the incessant manicuring, are now literally mini deserts 🏜️ 🥵

Lawns, verges, hedgerow banks, and more, that could and should, be blooming with native wildflowers.🌼🪲

Spaces that should be providing so much shelter, food, shade & now even moisture for wildlife.

Instead are they are lifeless, soulless, dry brown patches of scorched earth. 🔥

Our meadows at Wildacres are alive with life and in bloom with native wildflowers, as is our tiny suburban back garden.

The crazy thing is to create this habitat, we just have to leave the lawnmowers in the shed.

For a short flowering meadow you can cut every 6 weeks or even better, for a long flowering meadow cut once in early autumn, always removing the cuttings.

With a little generosity towards our fellow species these spaces should and could be oases 💦🌼🪲🐝 for our decimated wildlife.

Every space no matter how small, makes a significant difference in restoring nature and collectively, all have a huge impact!

These juvenile Sand martins will soon be making their inaugural epic journey to Senegal and will hopefully return to Wildacres next springtime. We’ll be waiting for them ! 💚

It’s heart warming to know that this nesting habitat will be here for them and their offspring for decades to come. The pond, the insect life, the burrows, it’s exactly what they need.

Huge thanks to our wonderful volunteers who built this Sand martin nesting structure throughout January February and March this year - 3 very wet and windy months! The challenging weather conditions didn’t dampen their determination to get the project finished in time for the sand martins’ arrival in April. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

Want to discover the joy of connecting with nature at Wildacres? 🌿🐝

We have transformed land in Co. Wicklow into a thriving nature reserve and biodiversity education centre. Now, we are inviting you to get hands-on with our Biodiversity Monitoring Project 2026!

🎥Special Announcement: We are thrilled to welcome wildlife videographer from Rewildlife YouTube Channel who will be on-site capturing video footage of the events throughout the day!

Thanks to support from the The Heritage Council Heritage Council under the Community Heritage Grant Scheme, we are offering this immersive, 1-hour guided experience for a nominal fee.

Come along to monitor Irish pond life and help track our vital pollinator species 🐝

🕒 What to Expect:

Guided Mini-Tour: A vibrant 30-minute walk through a beautiful mosaic of restored wildlife habitats.

Citizen Science: Learn how to conduct an official Flower-Insect Timed Count and see if you can spot Ireland’s 6 most common bumblebee species!

Pond Life Sampling: Use our easy ID sheets to discover the fascinating aquatic creatures and native plants from our 67 wildlife ponds.

🎟️ Event Details:
Date: Friday 21st August 2026
Duration: 1 Hour (4 time slots available).
Price: €10 nominal fee (All proceeds go directly to biodiversity protection and education at Wildacres Nature Reserve).

Concessions: 2 no-fee slots are available per session for OAPs or unwaged individuals (Please contact us directly to book these).

Group Size: Maximum 16 people per slot.
Age restrictions: Minimum age 16.

👟 What to Bring & Know:
Arrival: Please arrive 15 minutes before your chosen time slot. Directions will be emailed to you one week prior.
Gear: Wear sturdy outdoor walking shoes, long sleeves, long trousers, and bring a rain jacket just in case!
