Bambu Indah Ubud

Newest members of the Bambu Indah family; take a morning walk across the rice fields to pay them a visit.

We serve eggs laid by our ducks, coconuts bagged and cut from our palm trees, and goat cheese milked from our does. With architecture and design, our focus is to live as light as possible on the land and what drives us is nature.

Nature is our greatest asset and guide.

Tembaga is the first place to eat built around longevity before anything else. The cooking leans on anti-inflammatory ingredients, most of them grown a short walk from the fire.

It follows the Balinese tradition of eating together. Long shared tables, dishes passed around, lunch that slows down the middle of the day.

Just before noon, the live fire had just begun preparing for the meals of the day. The rice came from the paddies out front. The herbs were cut this morning. You taste the place before you taste the seasoning.

Nothing here is built from a single material. Bambu Indah puts copper against bamboo, stone against ironwood, and lets each one do what it does best.

The bamboo carries the structure. The copper ages and softens with the weather. The stone holds the cool. Set side by side, they end up complementing each other rather than competing.

All of it put together in the spirit of originality and ecological mindfulness.

Padi House sits two floors up, above the resort's own paddies, with the Bongkasa valley falling away below. The rice you watch from the porch is the rice that turns up later on the table.

Upstairs, reached by a wooden spiral staircase, the room settles into indigo. The round bathroom is the part people tend to remember: a copper tub and a copper rain shower built around a clump of bamboo that grows straight up through the floor from below.

Mornings here are slow ones. Light, birdsong, the valley waking up, and not much reason to go anywhere.

Up close there is a whole landscape in it, fern shapes a few millimetres tall, all leaning towards the light.

The property is full of small things like this. A line of grain in old timber, the pattern water leaves on stone, moss filling a crack no one cleared. None of it is arranged. It just turns up where the land is left to do its own thing.

Most of the work is slowing down enough to see them.
