Vietnam, 2017: The Bagel That Broke My Foot (and Changed Everything)
Ever had your life completely derailed⌠by a bagel?
If youâve known me over the years, maybe you know me as a mindset + business coach.
Or from my teaching days in Vietnam.
Or maybe from those three wild years in India⌠acting in Bollywood.
Orâ
You have no idea who I am and somehow ended up on my page because the algorithm dragged you here. (Heyđ)
Let me take you back to where it all shifted.
I was living in Hanoi.
Life was good.
Iâd just hosted a TEDx event, was doing corporate trainings, and had a travel show on local TV.
One morning, I hop on my scooter to grab a bagel.
(Because Iâm from Jersey â and bagels are sacred.)
I turn a corner.
Hit some sand.
Skid out.
Crash.
I break my foot.
Not doing something epic.
Not hiking a volcano.
Just⌠a bagel run.
And that crash?
Wasnât my first plot twist.
đ In NYC, doing great at Yelp â then out of nowhere, diagnosed with an autoimmune disease.
đ In Vietnam, building momentum â then boom: broken foot.
đ In India, coaching and acting â then the pandemic hits. I get evacuated.
Every time I thought I was leveling up, life pulled the rug.
At first, I saw those moments as setbacks.
Now I see them as checkpoints.
Invitations to slow down and ask:
Whatâs actually in my control?
And what am I going to do about it?
That shift changed everything â for me and in my work coaching clients.
Because hereâs what Iâve learned:
Itâs not always rock bottom that creates change.
Sometimes itâs a quiet nudge â a feeling youâve outgrown the current version of your life.
It doesnât always show up as a crisis.
Sometimes itâs boredom.
Restlessness.
That low-key voice asking, âIs this it?â
That voice matters.
That voice deserves your attention.
You donât need a breakdown to have a breakthrough.
Sometimes growth looks like choosing to pivot before youâre forced to.
And sometimesâŚ
It takes a bagel to remind you of that.

đVietnam, 2015.
I had less than $1,000 in my bank account.
No job. No plan. No clue what I was doing.........
Recently, I got invited to speak at an event in Bali.
I shared about how my two years in Vietnam ended⌠because of a bagel.
(More on that later.)
But before the bagel, hereâs how it all started: đ
I dressed up as Santa Claus. đ
Why? Because it paid $200 â and I desperately needed it.
That $200 gig turned into a teaching job.
That teaching job turned into a public speaking class.
That class led to me organizing workshops,
which eventually led to co-organizing the biggest TEDx event in Hanoi â
and coaching the speakers to deliver talks that mattered.
And that experience?
It became the unexpected launchpad for my coaching career.
All because I said yes to a job in a hot Santa suit in Hanoi.
đ Life rarely unfolds how we expect it to.
The path isnât always clear when you start â but it gets clearer when you move.
So if youâre waiting to feel âreadyâ before you leap⌠this is your sign.
You donât need a 10-year plan.
You just need one bold step.
đ
Tag a friend who needs this reminder.

What if itâs not failure youâre afraid of⌠but success?
In our session, Tom admitted he was struggling with consistency. But the real block?
He feared that success would cost him his freedom.
Hereâs what we uncovered:
⢠He was swinging between extremes â all-in or totally checked out.
⢠Deep down, he didnât feel worthy of the next level.
⢠His identity still saw him as inconsistent â and our actions always match our identity.
⢠Work started to feel like a cage, not a choice.
Through coaching and visualization, he shifted his mindset:
Work can be a path to freedom â not something that takes it away.
The key wasnât more discipline. It was a new perspective.

The inner critic is LOUD when youâre about to level up.
It says things like:
⢠âWho do you think you are to charge that much?â
⢠âYouâre not ready yet, just tweak it a little moreâŚâ
⢠âEveryoneâs already doing this, why would anyone pick you?â
Sound familiar?
Entrepreneurship isnât just about building a business.
Itâs about managing the voice in your head that tries to talk you out of taking action.
And the truth is?
That voice never fully goes away.
But you can learn how to quiet it down, so it doesnât run the show.
Imagine where youâd be if you took action every time the critic said âyouâre not ready.â
Probably a lot further than you are now, right?
The ones who win arenât the ones who never hear the criticâ
Theyâre the ones who stop listening.
Got an inner critic holding you back right now?
Drop âCRITICâ in the comments and Iâll send you my free worksheet to help shut it up and move forward.
