On 9 April 2026, Brawijaya University, Indonesia (UB) and Keio University, Japan (Keio) convened at UB for a joint academic exchange on digital cultural heritage preservation under the SOI Asia DHASH (Digital Humanities Asia/And Science Hub) Project, an Open Science initiative across the APAC region.

Project members critically assessed a digital documentation platform, shared field-based insights, and identified key challenges, all guided by a shared vision of safeguarding cultural knowledge for future generations.

A key focus was placed on the Candi temple structures in the Malang region, as institutions across APAC take concrete steps toward preserving and sharing cultural heritage through sustainable documentation, digital reconstruction, and active data utilization.

In mid-January, a SOI Asia : 大川 恵子, Marcos Sadao Maekawa, Eliko Akashi, 鈴木 莉保, held a kick-off meeting with colleagues from the University of Hawaii at Manoa to begin working together toward a shared vision for the Pacific — one that connects people, education, research, and technology in support of long-term regional resilience.

These conversations in Honolulu build on the commitment agreed by the SOI Asia community at the 60th SOI Asia Meeting in Bangkok, and were informed by ongoing regional connectivity initiatives, including collaboration with ARENA-PAC.

Both teams shared some reflections from the meetings, along with priority areas and what will be explored next, in a new blog post on the SOI Asia website:

On January 13, 2026, the APIE (Asia Pacific Internet Engineering) program held an online information and onboarding session in preparation for APIE Core Course Batch 08, led by SOI Asia Director Keiko Okawa.

The session welcomed more than 40 students from partner universities across Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam, and focused on helping participants get ready for the course — from onboarding to understanding the course structure and schedule across time zones.

This was the first of two information sessions planned ahead of Batch 08, supporting students as they prepare to begin their learning journey. We are also pleased to welcome students from Laos for the first time as part of the APIE community.

From May 19–23, 24 students from universities in 7 economies (Bangladesh, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Nepal, the Philippines, and Vietnam) gathered at 慶應義塾 / Keio University SOI Asia’s Haneda campus in Tokyo for the second APIE Advanced Camp. This intensive, hands-on activity gave participants the opportunity to design, deploy, and operate scalable and secure web services while deepening their understanding of Internet infrastructure.

The camp culminated in Meet the Internet Engineers—a casual gathering where students connected with professionals shaping the future of the Internet. More than 30 guests from the Internet industry, academia, organizations, and APIE alumni joined the event.

The Asia Pacific Internet Engineering program is designed and operated by SOI Asia and APNIC, in collaboration with the WIDE Project and AITAC, and supported by the APNIC Foundation.

APIE Camp #05 in USK 04/12/2024

From November 18-22, 2024, 19 students from across Asia gathered at Universitas Syiah Kuala (USK) in Banda Aceh, Indonesia, for a transformative week of hands-on learning and collaboration.

During the 5-day camp, participants worked with experts from APNIC, Amazon Web Services (AWS), USK, and 慶應義塾 / Keio University, immersing in topics like network design, server virtualization, cybersecurity, IoT, and cloud computing.

This camp, once again, saw a significant representation of women in tech—more than 1/3 of female participants, which reinforces the alignment with APIE program supporter APNIC Foundation's strategic pillars.

📢 Vietnam-Japan University Integrates APIE Program into Curriculum

The APIE Program has reached a significant milestone with its integration into the formal curriculum at Vietnam Japan University (VJU). Starting in October 2024, third-year Computer Science and Engineering (BCSE) students began taking Understanding the Internet and Operating the Internet as part of their required Computer Networks and Communications course.

Through this collaboration, students gain not only academic credits, but also digital badges via the Inxignia platform, helping them build a professional learning portfolio. Additionally, they can access APIE camps and internship programs, fostering connections with peers and professionals in the region.

This development follows the MoU between VJU and SOI Asia (via Keio University) signed in late 2023, which included efforts like onsite visits to VJU to discuss collaboration opportunities.
