Striped and slender, drifting slow,
red and white in gentle flow;
wait a minuteโฆ what have we here?
not the common cousin here,
a rarer ribbon to and fro.
It is easy to mistake this for the more common black-and-white relative, the Ringed Pipefish. The ๐๐ฟ๐ผ๐ฎ๐ฑ ๐๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐ฃ๐ถ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ณ๐ถ๐๐ต rewards those who slow down and truly look. Its rich red-and-white bands and graceful ribbon-like movements make it one of Lembehโs subtler but more memorable finds.
Usually seen hovering beneath ledges or weaving through crevices in pairs, it feeds delicately on tiny crustaceans with its slender tubular snout. Like seahorses, pipefish belong to the same remarkable family where the males carry the eggs โ a quiet act of parental care performed by one of the reefโs most elegant drifters.

Who is he and who is she?
Why, both!
Circling slow,
competitively;
who bears the eggs,
who wanders free?
Hypselodoris tryoni is a simultaneous hermaphrodite - each individual possesses both male and female reproductive organs, and during mating, both partners may exchange s***m at the same time.
But reproduction is not an equal bargain. Producing and carrying eggs demands far more energy than simply supplying s***m, and in this delicate biological game, each nudibranch is thought to prefer the male role whenever possible. Beneath the graceful swirling and apparent romance lies quiet negotiation - who bears the cost, and who gets to drift away free?
Dive with us, and be amazed by the almost infinite varieties of nudibranch. See them mate, find their eggs!

Stick and stitch, snip and hitch,
dress to hide, survivalโs pitch;
reef couture, a clever glitch.
The ๐๐๐๐จ๐ซ๐๐ญ๐จ๐ซ ๐๐ซ๐๐ is Lembehโs resident stylist, carefully clipping and attaching bits of sponge, algae, and hydroids onto its hooked setae like a living suit of camouflage. This ever-changing disguise helps it blend seamlessly into its surroundings โ and sometimes even borrow the defenses of the very organisms it wears.
Slow-moving but endlessly meticulous, it is often overlooked as just another patch of debris until it shifts, ever so slightly. For the observant diver, itโs a reminder that in the muck, even the smallest creatures are masters of invention โ turning the reef itself into both armour and art.

Starry, starry night,
velvet dark with speckles bright -
shifting skin, then gone from sight.
The Starry Night Octopus is a quiet marvel of Lembehโs sandy slopes, cloaked in deep browns and blacks dusted with shimmering white spots like a living night sky. A master of camouflage and mood, it can transform in an instant - from bold, star-speckled contrast to near invisibility against the muck.
Primarily nocturnal, it emerges under cover of darkness to hunt small crustaceans, moving with fluid intelligence and curiosity. For divers lucky enough to encounter it, thereโs a brief moment of connection - a watchful gaze, a subtle shift in colour - before it melts back into the shadows, as if the night itself had come alive and slipped away.

Wavy and leafy, drifting easy,
sunlit symbiote, energy freebie -
softly swaying, reef-life dreamy.
The ๐จ๐ป๐ฑ๐๐น๐ฎ๐๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐ฃ๐ต๐๐น๐น๐ผ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐๐บ๐ถ๐๐บ is one of Lembehโs more ethereal nudibranchs, with delicate, leaf-like cerata that ripple like soft coral in the current. But this beauty carries a clever secret - it โfarmsโ symbiotic zooxanthellae within its tissues, gaining energy from sunlight much like a coral. Often found on or near soft corals it feeds on, it blends in effortlessly, making it a rewarding find for the patient observer.
Unlike many nudibranchs, it doesnโt rely solely on active feeding - this quiet solar partnership allows it to thrive in plain sight, a gentle drifter in the muck that rewards those who slow down and truly look.
