🇭🇺 A new chapter in Hungarian politics begins.

Today, the new Országgyűlés (National Assembly) was officially formed, marking the end of the mandate of the previous Hungarian kormány (government). The newly elected országgyűlési képviselők (parliamentary representatives) took their oath 📜 and officially began their parliamentary work.

With the 2/3 többség (majority) of the TISZA Party 🟦, the process of forming the new government has also begun.

The new Országgyűlés elected Ágnes Forsthoffer as az Országgyűlés házelnöke (Chair of the National Assembly). 👩‍⚖️🇭🇺👏

The parliament also elected the new miniszterelnök (Prime Minister) of the Hungarian kormány (government): Péter Magyar, leader of the TISZA Party 🏛️🇭🇺👏

The full government, including the 16 new miniszterek (ministers), is expected to be formed in the coming days ⏳ After that, the new government can officially begin its work.

📚 If you would like to better understand the different Hungarian political institutions, election processes, and parliamentary terms, check out our previous posts in the series.

🇭🇺 We explain the key concepts step by step in both Hungarian and English.

🗳️ What happens after the választás (election)?

The process does not end when voting is over — important steps follow. 🇭🇺

➡ szavazatszámlálás (vote counting)
Polling stations close at 7 PM, and the counting of votes begins.

➡ előzetes eredmények (preliminary results)
By late evening, the first results are already available.

➡ hivatalos eredmények (official results)
Final results are announced only after all votes are counted, usually about one week later.

➡ parlamenti ciklus (parliamentary term)
The new parliament is elected for a period of four years.

➡ parlamenti mandátum (parliamentary seat)
Elected representatives receive their seats in the Parliament.

➡ kormányalakítás (government formation)
The winning party or coalition forms a government by electing the miniszterelnök (prime minister).

These steps ensure that the election results are accurate and the new government can start its work. ✅

🗳️ What happens on szavazás napja (election day)?

Here’s how voting works step by step in Hungary 🇭🇺

➡ szavazókör (polling station)
You can vote only at your designated polling station between 6:00 AM and 7:00 PM.

➡ szavazólap (ballot)
First, you prove your identity, then you receive your ballot papers.

➡ szavazófülke (voting booth)
You go alone into the booth and vote in secret.

➡ érvényes szavazat (valid vote)
You must mark your choice with two intersecting lines (✗) to make your vote valid.

➡ szavazóurna (ballot box)
Finally, you put your ballot into the box and leave.

Simple steps — but each one is important for a fair and secure election. ✅

🇭🇺 The Hungarian választások (elections) are based on some important principles.

These principles make the election system democratic and fair. 🗳️

➡ általános választójog (universal suffrage)
All Hungarian citizens over the age of 18 can vote in the elections.

➡ egyenlő választójog (equal vote)
Every vote counts equally in the elections.

➡ titkos szavazás (secret ballot)
No one knows who you voted for.

➡ nem kötelező szavazás (voting is not mandatory)
It is up to each person to decide whether to go and vote.

These principles are very important in every democratic system.
They ensure that elections are free and fair. 🗳️

🗳️🇭🇺 Magyarország választ. (Hungary votes.)

Photos from Hunify's post 31/03/2026

🇭🇺 Not everyone votes in Hungary on election day.
Some Hungarians can szavazás külföldről (voting from abroad) 🌍🗳️

There are different groups of Hungarians living outside Hungary:

➡ határon túli magyarok (cross-border Hungarians)
They live in neighboring countries in the Carpathian Basin, not in Hungary.

➡ diaszpóra magyarok (Hungarians in the diaspora)
They live in other parts of the world.

➡ elvándorolt magyarok (Hungarian emigrants, expats)
They were born in Hungary but now live, work, or study abroad.

📮 Many Hungarians abroad can vote with levél-szavazat (mail-in ballot),
while others can vote in person at a külképviselet (consular office).

Voting from abroad is an important part of the Hungarian election system,
because many Hungarian citizens live outside the country but still have the right to vote. 🗳️

🇭🇺 Magyarország választ. (Hungary votes.)

🇭🇺 Another important part of the Hungarian election system is the pártlista (party list) 📋🗳️

In Hungary, not all representatives are elected from választókerületek (electoral districts).
Some representatives enter Parliament from pártlisták (party lists).

These representatives are called listás képviselők (party-list representatives) 🏛️

Voters do not vote for individual candidates here, but for politikai pártok (political parties).
Based on the results, mandátumok (seats) are distributed arányosan (proportionally) between the parties 📊

However, there is a választási küszöb (electoral threshold):
political parties must reach 5% of the votes to enter Parliament.

This system helps ensure that the composition of Parliament reflects the overall support of political parties in the country.

Understanding these systems helps you better see how votes are turned into political power 📚
