Semmelweis Alumni Meeting in London🇬🇧🎓

On June 12, the Directorate of International Relations and Alumni Affairs at Semmelweis University held an international alumni reunion at the Embassy of Hungary in London.🤝🇬🇧

Members of the Hungarian delegation included Dr. Éva Feketéné Szabó, Vice-Rector for Strategy and Development; Dr. Péter Nyirády, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine (ÁOK); Dr. Andrea Zsebe Miklósné Tenk, Dean of the András Pető Faculty (PAK); Dr. Tamás Hegedüs, Head of the Directorate of International Relations and Alumni Affairs; Éva Czékmán, international expert; and Szabolcs Tiger, consultant and international expert.

☝️The event began with opening remarks by Dr. Ferenc Kumin, Ambassador of Hungary to the United Kingdom, after which Dr. Éva Feketéné Szabó gave a speech on behalf of Rector Dr. Béla Merkely. Dr. Péter Nyirády also welcomed the participants. His presentation gave the more than eighty guests an insight into the life of the university’s namesake, Ignác Semmelweis, as well as into the institution’s history, mission, most significant developments, future goals, and international network.

📜 In the closing part of the ceremony, Dr. Andrea Zsebe Miklósné Tenk congratulated two outstanding organizations operating in the United Kingdom - Small Steps and The Rainbow Centre - on being awarded the title of “Designated Institute for Practice,” and then presented them with certificates of recognition in a formal ceremony. In their acceptance speeches, the leaders of the honored institutions recalled their decades-long commitment to conductive education in the United Kingdom and emphasized their intention to further strengthen cooperation with the parent institution in Hungary.🇭🇺

💬Following the presentations, the focus for the members of the alumni community shifted to networking, reminiscing about shared memories, and exchanging professional experiences. The closing reception provided an opportunity for informal conversations, during which participants were able to further deepen their professional and personal relationships.💙 🤍

A Semmelweis Egyetem Nemzetközi Kapcsolatok és Alumni Igazgatósága 2026. június 12-én nemzetközi alumni találkozót rendezett Magyarország londoni nagykövetségén.🤝🇬🇧

A magyar delegáció tagjai között szerepelt Feketéné Dr. Szabó Éva stratégiai és fejlesztési rektorhelyettes, dr. Nyirády Péter, az Általános Orvostudományi Kar (ÁOK) dékánja, dr. Tenk Miklósné dr. Zsebe Andrea, a Pető András Kar (PAK) dékánja, dr. Hegedüs Tamás, a Nemzetközi Kapcsolatok és Alumni Igazgatóság igazgatója, Czékmán Éva nemzetközi szakértő, valamint Tiger Szabolcs tanácsadó nemzetközi szakértő.

☝️A rendezvényt elsőként dr. Kumin Ferenc nagykövet köszöntője nyitotta meg, majd dr. Merkely Béla rektor képviseletében Feketéné Dr. Szabó Éva stratégiai és fejlesztési rektorhelyettes mondott beszédet. Utánuk dr. Nyirády Péter dékán is üdvözölte a résztvevőket. Ezt követően a több mint nyolcvan vendég a dékán előadásán keresztül ismerhette meg a Semmelweis Egyetem névadójának életútját, az intézmény történetét, küldetését, legfontosabb fejlesztéseit, jövőbeli célkitűzéseit és nemzetközi kapcsolatrendszerét.

📜Az ünnepség záró részében dr. Tenk Miklósné dr. Zsebe Andrea dékán gratulált az Egyesült Királyságban működő két kiemelkedő szervezetnek, a Small Stepsnek és a Rainbow Centre-nek a „Designated Institute for Practice” cím elnyeréséhez, majd ünnepélyes keretek között elismerést adott át számukra. A díjazott intézmények vezetői köszönőbeszédeikben felidézték a konduktív pedagógia iránti, az Egyesült Királyságban több évtizede tartó elkötelezettségüket, és hangsúlyozták szándékukat a magyar anyaintézménnyel való együttműködés további erősítésére.🇭🇺

💬Az előadásokat követően az alumni közösség tagjai számára a kapcsolatépítés, a közös emlékek felidézése és a szakmai tapasztalatok megosztása került a középpontba. A rendezvényt záró fogadás kötetlen beszélgetésekre is lehetőséget biztosított, amelynek során a résztvevők tovább mélyíthették szakmai és személyes kapcsolataikat.💙 🤍

Sleep disorders increase the risk of dementia, Alzheimer's disease, and cognitive decline: a meta-analysis

📢 Sleep Disorders and Dementia Risk - New Meta-Analysis Insights
A recent GeroScience study examined how common sleep disorders affect dementia risk, including Alzheimer’s disease and cognitive decline.

🔍 Key findings:
• Analysis of 39+ cohort studies showed that both sleep apnea and insomnia significantly increased dementia risk.
• Sleep apnea was associated with ~33% higher risk of all-cause dementia and ~45% higher risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
• Insomnia was linked to higher risks of Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia.
• Other sleep disorders were also associated with elevated risk.

💡 Why it matters:
Treating sleep disorders may improve quality of life and help reduce dementia risk, especially in older adults and high-risk groups.

Imbalanced sleep increases mortality risk by 14-34%: a meta-analysis

📢 Sleep Duration and Mortality Risk - New Meta-Analysis Findings
A recent meta-analysis published in GeroScience explored how sleep duration relates to all-cause mortality in adults.

🔍 Key findings:
• Short sleep (< 7 hours per night) was associated with about a 14 % higher mortality risk compared to 7–8 hours.
• Long sleep (≥ 9 hours per night) was linked to roughly a 34 % higher mortality risk.
• These associations were observed in both men and women, with long sleep showing particularly strong effects in women.

💡 Why it matters:
The study highlights that both insufficient and excessive sleep may be linked to increased mortality - an important insight for public health strategies and healthy lifestyle recommendations.

🎓Why Semmelweis? – Dr. Diana Reser 🎓

🫀Recently, as part of our “Meet the Alumni” lecture series, we had the pleasure of welcoming our former student, Professor Dr. Diana Reser, to Semmelweis University . Professor Reser is the Chief Cardiac Surgeon at the HIRSLANDEN Heart Clinic in Zurich and Switzerland’s first female Professor of Cardiac Surgery. She delivered a presentation for international students on career opportunities in international medicine, her professional journey and advancement, and her experiences within the Swiss healthcare sector.

BioAFM Summer School is coming to Semmelweis University!

We are pleased to welcome our Alumni members, current PhD students, postdoctoral fellows, and researchers to Semmelweis University’s two-day intensive training program dedicated to the biological applications of Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM).

🔬 Participants will gain both theoretical knowledge and practical experience in AFM imaging, force measurements, sample preparation, and biomolecular scanning, while working with state-of-the-art instrumentation.
