Geothermal Project "Deeep" in Vienna
Geothermal energy is increasingly emerging as one of the cleanest and most environmentally friendly energy sources. It represents a vast and untapped potential that could provide a clean, reliable, and economically viable energy supply. This is especially relevant for urban areas, where the demand for practical, eco-friendly, and sustainable energy alternatives is steadily growing.
An increasing number of European cities, such as Munich, Paris, and Copenhagen, which are considered pioneers in geothermal energy use, recognize this need. Vienna has now joined them with a major geothermal project, "Deeep." This is a joint venture of the Austrian energy company OMV and Wien Energie, the largest regional energy supplier in Austria.
The aim of this project is to generate sustainable energy from the Earth's depths to provide district heating for Vienna. Drilling has begun in the Aspern district at a depth of over 3,000 meters as part of preparations for Vienna’s first geothermal plant. It is estimated that this technology could meet the heating needs of around 200,000 households in Vienna. Drilling is expected to be completed by mid-year, with the plant scheduled to become operational in 2028.
Our company STE d.o.o. as a partner in the "Deeep" project
Our consulting and operational company, STE d.o.o., is actively involved in the "Deeep" project alongside our German partners. We participate in the planning and installation of the fiber optic and sensor system aimed at acquiring and monitoring reservoirs up to 120°C.
In addition to this project, new initiatives are expected in the future.
