🌊 The Pakleni Islands might have one of the most misleading names in Croatia.

At first glance, “Pakleni” sounds like it has something to do with hell.

But the name actually comes from paklina, a type of pine resin once used by local shipbuilders to protect wooden boats.

So despite the name, the story has much more to do with boats than hell.

🛥️ Most people visit Brač for beaches, villages and crystal clear water.

But hidden along its coastline are old military naval shelters carved directly into the island.

These tunnels were built so military boats could enter from the Adriatic and disappear inside the rock, completely hidden from view.

Today, the military is gone, but the tunnels are still there — and most visitors to Brač have no idea they’re passing right by them.
