On behalf of the Government of Guyana, I handed over ten ATVs to healthcare workers in Regions 1,7,8 and 9. These ATVs will be used in various communities to enhanced the delivery of health services.

It was a privilege to join Dr Stanley B. Prusiner, the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine 1997 and Dr Eric Cioe-Pena to discuss Global Trends, Local Insights, and the Role of Innovation in Global Health at Northwell’s Constellation Forum. The program will air on Monday in New York.

To know whether you are underweight, normal weight, overweight or obese you need to measure yourself. This is determined by calculating the body mass index (BMI, defined as the weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared).

Being overweight is defined as a BMI of 25 to 29.9 kg/m2.

Obesity is defined as a BMI of ≥30 kg/m2.

Severe obesity is defined as a BMI ≥40 kg/m2 (or ≥35 kg/m2 in the presence of comorbidities).

CARPHA assists in the training of staff from the Ministry of Health and various other related agencies in Guyana on strengthening our surveillance systems to prevent foodborne infections. The team from CARPHA is headed by Dr Lisa Indar and includes several experts who will be delivering the training.

Guyana joins the World Health Organisation (WHO) in observance of World Mental Health Day on October 10 under the theme: “Making Mental Health & Well-Being for All a Global Priority.” Over the last two years, Guyana has made many strides in improving the delivery of mental health care; these include:
1) The Mental Health Protection and Promotion Act has replaced the 1934 Mental Health Ordinance.
2) The Su***de Prevention Bill was laid in parliament and hopefully will be debated and passed when parliament resumes.
3) The establishment of the mental health board
4) The training of healthcare workers to deliver improved mental healthcare.
5) We provide subventions to NGOs to provide rehabilitation services to substance abuse addicts.
6) We are improving care at the National Psychiatric Hospital.
7) We are expanding the community psychiatric programs.
8) Conducting research in mental health to improve services. Currently, the MoH, in collaboration with Colombia University, is conducting three major studies on mental health in Guyana.

As required by the 1897 Treaty of Washington and the 1899 Arbitral Award, the boundary as determined by the Award was demarcated on the ground between 1900 and 1904 by Commissioners appointed by Britain and Venezuela. For Venezuela, the Commissioners were Dr. Abraham Tirado, Civil Engineer of the United States of Venezuela/ Chief of the Boundary Commission, and Dr. Elias Toro, Surgeon General of the Illustrious Central University of Venezuela/ Second Commissioner on behalf of Venezuela. The British Commissioners were H.J Perkins and C. Wilgress Anderson.
On 7 January 1905, this official boundary map delineating the boundary as awarded and demarcated, was drawn up and signed by the Commissioners of both Britain and Venezuela and promulgated in Georgetown, at the Combined Court.

I will like to thank the International Atomic Energy Agency for their donation of various types of equipment to measure radiation. These equipment will be use by the Standards and Technical Division of the Ministry of Health to certify our medical imaging facilities throughout the country.
