The Guyana Visual Arts Competition and Exhibition (GVACE) is deeply saddened by the passing of national artists in recent days. First, Francis Ferreira, sculptor, farmer and lover of nature, and now George Simon, painter, archaeologist, and enabler. Both men made their contributions to Guyana in their own unique and similar ways. Both were "close to the ground", roots people. Francis was a stalwart of the Main Street Artists group. George brought Amerindian art into the foreground. His work in archaeology is helping to rewrite the history of our Indigenous peoples. Their passing adds to the sadness of these already difficult times. Nevertheless, they have made significant contributions not only to Art, but to Guyanese culture and nation-building. This is their legacy that will live on. The GVACE extends condolences to their families and the Art community of Guyana.
Just a reminder that the GVACE Exhibition continues at the National Gallery until August 24th. Thanks for your support and long may it continue!!!
