HAIRCUTS

We decided after just one nightmare experience at a barber when Blake was just a little guy that we would need to cut his hair at home. And, it remains that way to this day. However, much has changed with MANY years of ‘practice’.

In the beginning, I cut his hair as he slept but that was short lived as he quickly did not sleep through it anymore.

Once I had to cut his hair when he was awake, it would take a minimum of 3 days to get his hair fully cut. I had to plan around 3 day weekends from school and it was a much dreaded time. There were many tears, for both of us. It was extremely heartbreaking but had to be done as he also did not like his hair washed. A shaved head is much easier to keep clean vs a head full of thick longer hair.

The first thing that helped tremendously was finding the Wahl brand of clippers which are extremely quiet.

Next, I began sitting him in his suspended swing. He was more relaxed but still did not enjoy it whatsoever. However, I was able to get it done in about 3 hours vs 3 days as we would take breaks and I would push him on his swing to help him regulate.

Once he outgrew the swing, he began sitting on his dad’s lap and we would push many edible reinforcers. Still, it was a very stressful thing for him.

At around age 11, despite nothing changing that I am aware of, haircuts again became terrifying for Blake. It was a struggle!!!

It took a couple of years for him to be more settled before he was again able to tolerate it on his dad’s lap with few tears and minimal fighting.

We had another bump a couple of years ago when it was just too much for him again.

Suddenly, he was fine. No anxiety. No tears. No attempts to flee. It was then that we were able to get him to transition to sitting on his own.

Here he is tonight at age 17. Sitting still and calm. Haircut, shave and the hairs trimmed between his eyebrows. All done in 7 minutes. He didn’t want the sweet treat we had offered but requested a quick momma kiss at the end.

We always also reinforce with a shower, which has been a huge motivator over the years. He is enjoying that now with the help of his dad!

There are no words I can use to describe just how proud I am of him ❤️

*Blake will not wear a cape so I catch as much hair as I can in a bowl as he does not like it to fall on him. 14/03/2022
