Topic: DELIVERED FROM THE BO***GE OF CORRUPTION.

Scripture Reading: “because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bo***ge of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. ”
Romans 8:21 NKJV

God demonstrated His unconditional love by sending Jesus Christ to die for humanity while people were still imperfect and rebellious sinners. God did not wait for humanity to clean up its life or earn His approval before showing His love. He acted while humanity was at its worst. Jesus willingly died in the place of sinners, taking the spiritual penalty and judgment that humanity deserved. The cross is presented not just as a concept, but as an active, historical demonstration of divine commitment.

The Mosaic Law acted like a magnifying glass or a mirror. It did not create sin, but it clearly defined it, making human rebellion obvious and undeniable. By showing humanity how deeply flawed it was, the Law proved that no one could save themselves. It made the need for a Saviour urgent. Once sin and death ruled over humanity, God’s grace extended even further and completely covered it. Just as sin and death once ruled over humanity, grace now rules, granting eternal life through Jesus Christ.

The Law exposed sin and revealed the consequences of humanity’s rebellion against God. Sin brought corruption into the world, subjecting everything to decay and death. But through God’s grace and Jesus Christ’s sacrifice on Calvary, we have the hope of glorification. We are no longer bound by corruption but have the opportunity to receive eternal life through Jesus Christ.

Topic: THE EARNEST EXPECTATION OF CREATION

Scripture Reading: “For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God. ”
Romans 8:19 NKJV

“Earnest expectation” comes from the rare Greek word apokaradokia, which carries the idea of watching something with the head stretched forward, the eyes turned away from other objects, and completely focused on what is approaching. Picture a person standing on tiptoe, neck craned, scanning the horizon with complete focus on a single distant figure arriving. This is how the Apostle Paul describes creation. It is a picture of intense, focused waiting. It is not passive waiting, like waiting for a bus, but concentrated, breathless anticipation.

This idea of revealing is connected to the word apocalypse, which means an unveiling or a stripping away of what conceals something. Right now, the fullness of God’s children’s identity and glory is hidden beneath weakness, suffering, illness, and mortality. But on that day, the curtain will be pulled back, and their glorified status will be revealed for all creation to see.

When humanity sinned in Genesis, the natural world was subjected to frustration, futility, decay, disaster, and death—not by its own choice, but because of human sin. Creation did not choose this condition, yet it became subject to it because of humanity’s fall.

Creation currently suffers under the bo***ge of corruption. The Apostle Paul portrays creation as a pregnant woman experiencing labor pains, groaning and longing to be set free. These labor pains point to something greater that is coming.

Creation’s hope is therefore tied to humanity’s redemption. When believers are fully revealed as the children of God in glory at the end of the age, the physical universe itself will also be liberated from its present bo***ge and restored.

Creation is waiting. Creation is groaning. Creation is anticipating the day when what is presently hidden will be revealed, God’s children will enter into the fullness of their glory, and creation itself will share in the freedom that comes with their redemption.

Topic: SUFFERING NOT WORTHY.

Scripture Reading: “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. ”
Romans 8:18 NKJV

The Greek word used for “consider” is logizomai. This is a mathematical accounting term. It means to calculate, add up a column of figures, and reach a settled conclusion. The Apostle Paul isn't just offering a fleeting emotional thought. He has done the spiritual math. He has placed all human suffering on one side of the ledger and future glory on the other side and concluded that the suffering adds up to nothing by comparison.

The word “glory,” doxa, carries the Old Testament concept of weight. In the ancient world, the value of gold or silver was determined by its weight. The Apostle Paul is contrasting the weight of eternity with the temporary lightness of earthly pain. Even though our suffering feels heavy, crushing, and massive right now, the Apostle Paul assures us that when it is placed next to eternity, it loses its relative weight entirely.

The glory in us isn't just a light show we watch from the sidelines. It is a transformation that happens inside the believer. It refers to glorification, the final step of salvation, where the human body is resurrected, perfected, freed from sin, and made to reflect the character of Jesus perfectly.

The sufferings of this present time include all the sickness, sadness, stress, and hardship people face in a broken world. These things cannot be compared to God's plan for us. They may be heavy and frustrating at times and may seem as though they will crush us. But when we look at things in the light of eternity, we will realize that they are not a big deal in comparison. The weight of our present suffering will never ultimately crush us because our future glorification in Christ far outweighs it.

Did you know when we look at our present suffering and situation in the light of eternity it is not a big deal?

Topic: WE ARE CHILDREN OF GOD.

Scripture Reading: “The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, ”
Romans 8:16 NKJV

In the Roman world and culture, if a wealthy patriarch were worthy, he would adopt a son to carry on his family name and estate. This legal process had massive implications. Legal adoption instantly cancelled all previous debts, crimes, and legal obligations. The person was legally considered to be born as a brand-new entity.

In Roman law alone, a biological father could disown his natural son under extreme circumstances. However, an adopted son could never be disowned in the same way because the father chose the son. The relationship was based on love and choice, and that choice was considered permanent.

For an adoption to become legally binding, it required seven witnesses to witness the adoption. In verse 16, the Holy Spirit acts as the ultimate witness, legally testifying to and sealing the believer’s permanent status in the family of God.

In the Jewish tradition, the oldest son received a double portion of the inheritance. But in Roman law, all adopted and biological children shared the inheritance equally. The Apostle Paul is using the Roman concept to make a staggering point: God does not treat true believers like second-class citizens or stepchildren.

Everything that belongs to Jesus by right—His righteousness, access to the Father, eternal glory, and authority—He shares equally with believers. You do not inherit from Christ; you inherit with Christ.

“If indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.”

In the context of the early Church, this suffering meant facing social isolation, economic ruin, and physical persecution. The Apostle Paul reframes suffering—not as a sign of God’s abandonment, but as evidence of family and identity.

Jesus’ life followed a specific trajectory: humility and suffering first, followed by resurrection and glory. As joint heirs, believers must walk the same path. Suffering for righteousness is the family trademark. It validates that a person belongs to Christ and assures that they will also participate in His ultimate physical resurrection and glory.

Did you know we are heirs and joint heirs together with Christ as we don't inherit from Christ but with Him?

Topic: NO SPIRIT OF BO***GE

Scripture Reading: “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of bo***ge again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” ”
Romans 8:14-15 NKJV

Believers are guided by the Holy Spirit, and we are adopted into God’s family, replacing fear and slavery to sin with an intimate relationship in which we can call God “Father.” Those who allow the Holy Spirit to influence their daily lives show evidence of belonging to God as His children. This guidance helps believers turn away from sin and walk in holiness. Before knowing Christ, people live under a spirit of slavery built on guilt, legalism, and the fear of condemnation or death. The Holy Spirit removes this paralyzing fear.

God does not merely tolerate believers; He lovingly adopts them into His family. Adoption means full membership, love, and a permanent place in the household of God. “Abba” is an Aramaic term of intimate and affectionate parental address, similar to “Daddy” or “Papa.” The phrase shows that believers can approach God, the Creator, with the close trust and confidence of a beloved child speaking to a loving parent.

Believers should no longer allow the sinful nature or the fear of judgment to control and dominate their lives. Because of the Spirit of adoption, the power that sin once had over a person’s life is broken. Instead of being controlled by fear and sinful habits, the Holy Spirit gives the believer the power to walk in freedom as children of God.

We are adopted, and God has given us the divine right to call Him “Father.” This means we are no longer chained to or in bo***ge to sin. Instead, we now have life and are walking in the newness of mind through the Holy Spirit.

Did you know we are no longer under the bo***ge of sin. We are adopted into God's family?

Topic: PUTTING TO DEATH THE DEEDS OF THE BODY.

Scripture Reading: “For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. ”
Romans 8:13 NKJV

Believers are under no obligation to follow the sinful nature—the flesh. Instead, we are called to actively rely on the Holy Spirit to overcome sin and put to death sinful desires, attitudes, and practices in our daily lives.

Believers are debtors—not to the flesh. We do not owe our old sinful desires any obedience or loyalty because Christ has broken the ruling power of sin. Living according to the dictates of the flesh leads to spiritual death. True spiritual life is experienced as we allow the Holy Spirit to help us mortify, or put to death, the evil deeds and sinful practices of the body.

The flesh refers to human nature in rebellion against God, characterized by selfish, sinful, and destructive desires. When Paul says, “put to death” in Romans 8:13, he uses the Greek word thanatoute. The verb is in the present active indicative, second-person plural. The present tense communicates an ongoing action. Paul is therefore describing something believers are continually called to do—not a one-time event that happens when we become Christians.

Putting sin to death requires an intentional, daily decision to resist temptation and say no to sin. However, this is not accomplished through our own willpower. We depend upon the active presence, power, and strength of the Holy Spirit to help us continually put to death the sinful deeds of the body.

Living according to the flesh means allowing its appetites, pride, selfish desires, and sinful impulses to control and direct our lives. Although a person may be physically alive, Paul warns that living according to the flesh results in spiritual death. It produces a life increasingly separated from the will of God and, if persisted in, leads to eternal death.

Sanctification is an ongoing process in which God makes a believer increasingly holy and distinct from sin. It requires both God’s grace and the believer’s active participation. God works in us by His Spirit, while we are called to yield to Him, resist sin, and pursue holiness.

We are sanctified by the truth, and God’s Word is truth. Therefore, putting sin to death is not merely about trying harder to be good. It is about continually submitting ourselves to the Holy Spirit, allowing God’s Word to transform our thinking, and choosing each day to reject the desires of the flesh and walk according to the Spirit.

Did you know we must daily mortify our being. We must be sanctified by the Truth; God's Word is the Truth?

Topic: THE SAME SPIRIT THAT RAISED CHRIST FROM THE DEAD.

Scripture Reading: “But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.”
Romans 8:11 NKJV

The same Holy Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead lives within the believer and guarantees our future physical resurrection, while also giving us inner strength and spiritual life right now.

The Apostle Paul points us to the greatest demonstration of God’s power: the resurrection of Jesus Christ. He is reminding us that the power at work within the believer is not a new or untested power. It is the very same power that raised Jesus from the dead.

The Greek word oikei, translated “dwells” or “lives,” carries the idea of dwelling, settling down, or making a permanent home. The Holy Spirit is not merely visiting the believer; He has made the believer His dwelling place.

Jesus was raised from the dead, and those who belong to Him will also be raised. Paul uses the word thnēta, meaning mortal or subject to death. This promise is not merely about experiencing a spiritual feeling or going to heaven as a disembodied soul. Paul is pointing to a literal future resurrection of the body—a physical restoration in which our mortal bodies will be raised and transformed.

The Holy Spirit is the seal and guarantee of what God has promised. He is the down payment, or assurance, that what God accomplished in Jesus Christ will ultimately be accomplished in those who belong to Him.

Therefore, when our physical bodies experience sickness, aging, weakness, or disability, we must remember that our present condition is temporary. Our mortality does not have the final word. The same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead lives in us, giving us spiritual life now and assuring us of resurrection life to come.

And because the Spirit gives us life, we are not powerless in our present struggles. Through Him, we can continually put to death sinful patterns, overcome destructive habits, resist temptation, and grow in spiritual strength. We may struggle, but our struggles do not define us.

We are not defined by our past, our weaknesses, our failures, or our present limitations. The Spirit who raised Christ from the dead lives in us—and the God who raised Jesus will also give life to our mortal bodies.

Topic: DEAD TO SIN.

Scripture Reading: “And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. ”
Romans 8:10 NKJV

The Apostle Paul’s Striking Paradox

The Apostle Paul presents a striking paradox that every believer experiences simultaneously. He breaks the human experience into two distinct dimensions:

1. The body is dead because of sin**

The Apostle Paul uses the Greek word sōma for “body.” When he says that the body is dead, he does not mean that it has stopped breathing. Rather, he means that it is spiritually doomed to decay and physical death because of the Fall of Man. Human biology is under the sentence of mortality. The body ages, becomes sick, and eventually dies.

2. The spirit is life because of righteousness

The Apostle Paul contrasts the dying body with the spirit. Notice that he does not simply say that the spirit has life, but that the spirit is life itself because the believer has been justified and declared righteous by God. The human spirit is instantly made alive and connected to the eternal life of God.

Christ in you establishes a profound mystical union.

The Apostle Paul uses these three phrases almost interchangeably:

Christ in you
The Spirit of God dwells in you
The Spirit of Christ dwells in you

When the Apostle Paul writes that “the spirit is life because of righteousness,” he is talking about imputed righteousness of position. This is a legal term. God looks at the believer and credits Jesus’ perfect life to their account. You are legally declared innocent and righteous in God’s courtroom.

This is the root cause of spiritual life: imputed righteousness. Because the Holy Spirit lives inside you, He begins to change your desires and helps you actually live a righteous life.

Topic: YOU ARE IN THE SPIRIT.

Scripture Reading: “But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His. ”
Romans 8:9 NKJV

The Apostle Paul uses the Greek preposition en (“in”) to describe a state of being, identity, or citizenship rather than merely a physical location.

Being “in the flesh” does not mean merely having a human body. It refers to the old, unredeemed human nature, Adam’s lineage, and the power of sin and death. A person who is “in the flesh” is spiritually bankrupt and legally helpless before God’s law.

Being “in the Spirit” means existing in a completely new sphere of life. You have been transferred out of Adam’s family and into Christ’s family. The Spirit is now your primary environment, atmosphere, and governing authority.

The Apostle Paul tells the Roman believers, “You, however, are not in the flesh.” For the believer, the flesh is no longer their home address or their master, even though they still battle sinful desires.

The believer has the indwelling presence of God’s Holy Spirit within them—not as a temporary guest or someone who comes and goes with occasional emotional highs, but as a permanent Resident. If the Resident is there, the ownership of the house has legally changed hands.

By connecting the Spirit of God with the Spirit of Christ, the Apostle Paul establishes that the Holy Spirit is the mediator of Jesus’ own presence to the believer. To have the Holy Spirit is to have Christ Himself dwelling within you.

There is no two-tier Christianity in Paul’s teaching, where some have the Spirit and others do not. You either have the Spirit and belong to Christ, or you do not have the Spirit and are still in the flesh.

The believer is no longer controlled and dominated by the flesh and its desires. Rather, the indwelling Holy Spirit brings about a transforming work within them. As they depend more on God and yield to the Holy Spirit who lives within them, He transforms their minds, bringing them into conformity with God’s original design.
