Trip of a lifetime in the Western Arctic.

Left to right: me, Andy Levin, Sandy Sum, Anna Boser, Daniel Kunin, and Tim Kunin.

We’re standing on Archimedes Ridge, looking down into the valley beside us - right where the Western Arctic caribou herd moves through. Intersecting with this herd was the central goal of our expedition, and we’ve done it.

We’ve already seen hundreds, if not thousands, of caribou moving through this range - including more babies and young than we can count. We’re camped beside one of their crossing points for a couple of days, and it’s hard to describe just how incredible it is to see and hear so many animals together in a place like this.

This is exactly why we came here at this time, and it’s amazing to be standing in the middle of it. The whole place is stunning. The river has treated us well, the Pakboats are doing their job, and I’m very, very happy to be here.

It’s also a good reminder that the world is still full of wonders if we’re willing to go looking for them - and stop long enough to appreciate them when we find them. I love animals, and being surrounded by caribou, peregrines, marmots, gulls, geese, terns, and so much more has been incredibly rewarding.

This spot, this timing, this herd… I couldn’t ask for much more.

Tell me about a rescue dog who completely changed someone’s (yours?) life.

I’m getting closer to Alaska! One more flight to the state, then two more after that to get to the headwaters of the Kokalik River. If you’re confused about the content of this post, that’s fair! This page is largely about animal services, but for the next couple of weeks, I’m going to mix in some content from an epic canoe adventure in northern Alaska! Join my friends and I virtually as we travel through the land of the midnight sun and take some time to enjoy the incredible beauty of life on earth.

You’re probably here for the animal related content, but for the next couple of weeks I’m going to do something a little different. Five friends and I are paddling the Kokalik River from its source in northern Alaska up to Point Lay on the coast. Our trip will coincide with the Western Arctic Caribou herd migration and the summer solstice.

This will be the fourth year in a row we’ve managed to pull off a trip of this magnitude to a different arctic (or near arctic) river. These landscapes are so incredible, fragile and at risk. For the next couple of weeks, I want to tell you the story of this wild, majestic, and epic place, as well as the adventure of navigating through it. I want to tell you about the animals: Caribou, Musk Ox, Bear, Wolf, and much more: it’s always about the animals for me. If this content, isn’t your thing, I get it. We will mix in regular content and be back full tilt soon and coming to you from a training project in Sri Lanka by mid-July. Meanwhile, I’m excited to celebrate Juneteenth and July 4th in a way that will connect me to America beyond the abstract and polarization and into the tangible beauty of this place so many of us call home.

I invite you to join me from a distance. Follow the tracking map here: https://live.garmin.com/Peaveler

More updates soon! 🛶🏔️🐻🐺

Which dog charity or rescue would you volunteer for in a heartbeat?

One of the reasons we developed the Pro Leash Pole was to give professionals another option.

Not every situation calls for a traditional control pole. Sometimes you need flexibility. Sometimes you need a little more control. Sometimes you need to be able to adjust your approach as the animal’s behavior changes.

This clip comes from Washoe County Regional Animal Services putting the Pro Leash Pole to work in the field.

Built with rescue-grade life safety rope, designed to be less aversive than traditional control poles, and made to help handlers make better decisions in real time.

Thanks to the Washoe County team for sharing the footage and for everything you do for the animals in your community.

A few months ago, we donated leashes to support animal rescue efforts in Ukraine via Kristi Rescue.

Recently, we received these photos from the field.

No studio. No marketing campaign. Just good people doing difficult work in extraordinarily challenging circumstances.

The animals don’t care where help comes from. They just need someone willing to show up.

We’re grateful to see our Rescue Pro Harness Leashes being used by teams working to get animals to safety, and we’re grateful to everyone on the ground making those rescues possible.

To the rescuers, transporters, foster homes, veterinarians, and volunteers involved… thank you for what you do.

Stay safe.

This is what 41 Y Pole heads look like.

And yes, they’re all going to one customer. 🙂

Why?

Because I spent several days with their team, introducing them to the Y Pole system and talking about how it can fit into their handling program.

Not because the tool does the work for you.

Because when used appropriately, it can give staff more options, help mitigate risk, improve safety, and create better outcomes for the animals in their care.

One of the things I’ve learned over the years is that most organizations don’t have enough handling options available to their staff.

In fact, I’d be willing to bet I can make a pretty convincing case that you need more of these than you currently have.

If you’d like to have that conversation, let’s talk.

We’re happy to offer a free initial consultation to discuss your organization’s needs and whether the Y Pole system might be a good fit.

A 30-pound dog.
A 105-pound dog.

Both apparently had some thoughts about their vaccinations. 🙂

Good handling isn’t about the size of the animal. It’s about understanding the individual in front of you and having the right tools available when you need them.

Thanks to Does it Dangle for sharing this clip and putting our gloves to work.

This clip features our Task Master Glove, which is available now on our website, link in the comments!
