WORLD WAR I: THE TWO SHOTS THAT IGNITED THE BRUTAL FIGHTING

On the morning of July 28, 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria‑Hungary and his wife, Sophie, were driving through Sarajevo. A young Bosnian nationalist, Gavrilo Princip, was waiting nearby. He believed Bosnia should join Serbia, and he thought killing the Archduke would help achieve that goal. When he saw the car, he fired two shots, killing both Ferdinand and Sophie. The city reacted with shock, fear, and confusion.

Austria‑Hungary blamed Serbia and sent a list of strict demands. Serbia accepted most of them but refused a few important points. As a result, Austria‑Hungary declared war on Serbia. Alliances quickly pulled other nations in: Russia supported Serbia, Germany supported Austria‑Hungary, and soon France and Britain joined as well. What began as a local crisis became World War I.

Many people expected a short war, but it turned into years of brutal fighting. One rare moment of peace came on Christmas Day in 1914, when British and German soldiers met in “no man’s land,” exchanged small gifts, and even played football.

After four long years, the war ended on November 11, 1918, when Germany signed an armistice. The Treaty of Versailles followed in 1919, bringing heavy punishments for Germany and reshaping Europe. Today, Remembrance Day honors the millions who died and reminds us of the importance of peace.

BONNIE AND CLYDE:
THE GREAT DEPRESSION'S
MOST
WANTED COUPLE

Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow are remembered as two of the most notorious criminals of the Great Depression, a period marked by widespread poverty, unemployment, and social instability across the United States. Their story reflects not only personal choices, but also the harsh economic conditions of the early twentieth century.

Clyde Barrow was born on March 24, 1909, in Telico, Texas, into a poor but close-knit farming family. After years of drought caused the family farm to fail, the Barrows moved to Dallas in search of work. Clyde attended school until the age of sixteen and showed an early interest in music, learning to play the saxophone and guitar. Despite these ambitions, he became involved in crime under the influence of his older brother, Buck. Beginning with petty theft, Clyde progressed to car theft and armed robbery, and by 1929 he was already a wanted fugitive.

Bonnie Elizabeth Parker was born on October 1, 1910, in Rowena, Texas. Her father’s death when she was four years old left her mother to raise three children alone, and the family later relocated to West Dallas. Despite growing up in poverty, Bonnie was an intelligent and creative student who enjoyed poetry and performance. She dreamed of becoming an actress or writer, but financial hardship limited her opportunities. At sixteen, she married Roy Thornton, though the marriage was unhappy and ended in separation.

Bonnie met Clyde in 1930, and their relationship quickly developed into both a romantic and criminal partnership. During the Great Depression, legitimate work was scarce, particularly for young people from poor backgrounds. Together, they carried out a series of robberies and violent crimes that gained widespread attention and fueled public fascination.

Their crime spree came to an end on May 23, 1934, when law enforcement officers ambushed the couple on a rural road near Sailes, Louisiana. After tracking them for weeks, officers opened fire as their car approached, killing both almost instantly. Their deaths ended one of the most infamous crime sprees in American history and exposed the violent reality behind their legend.

SCROLLING MINDS

Social media is a huge part of teenage life today. Whether it’s scrolling on TikTok, sharing moments on Instagram, or finding inspiration on Pinterest, technology has completely changed how we connect. While social media is often labelled as “addictive,” is it really that bad—or has it actually made communication easier, faster, and more inclusive for our generation?

Most teenagers use social media every day, not just for entertainment, but to stay connected. It helps us keep in touch with friends and family, stay updated on what’s happening around the world, and express ourselves creatively. From discovering new ideas to finding communities that share our interests, social media has become a powerful tool that shapes how we learn, communicate, and grow.

Social media has become an important part of teenagers’ daily lives. One of its biggest advantages is that it connects people from different cultures around the world. It also allows news and information to spread quickly, and it provides instant entertainment through videos, games, and posts.

However, social media also has downsides. Many teenagers struggle with phone addiction, spending too much time online. Another serious issue is cyberbullying, which can include threatening messages or the sharing of inappropriate images. These problems show why it’s important to use social media responsibly.

In conclusion, the use of social media is inevitable. This article has highlighted that it can be both beneficial and harmful. It is essential that teenagers use social media responsibly, recognising its potential dangers while also appreciating the positive opportunities it offers. When used wisely, social media can be a powerful tool for connection, learning, and self-expression.
