Gennadius Library

Opened in 1926 with 26,000 volumes from diplomat and bibliophile, Joannes Gennadius, the Gennadius Library now holds a richly diverse collection in Athens.

Joannes Gennadius (1844-1932) offered his personal library to the American School of Classical Studies at Athens to house and maintain in 1922. The conditions of the deed of gift were that the collection would be housed separately, that it would remain in Greece, and that the Library would be available to the scholars of all nations. The Gennadius Library now holds a richly diverse collection of o

ver 145,000 books and rare bindings, archives, manuscripts, and works of art illuminating the Hellenic tradition and neighboring cultures. Located in an architecturally significant building across the street from the main American School campus, the Library has become an internationally renowned center for the study of Greek history, literature, and art, from ancient to modern times. In addition to its role as a library and research institution, “the Gennadeion” is also an active participant in the Athenian and international community through its public lectures, seminars, concerts, exhibitions, and publications.

Ο Γεννάδιος είχε πάντοτε την επιθυμία η βιβλιοθήκη του να βρει κάποτε μόνιμη στέγη στην Ελλάδα. Το 1922 προσέφερε τη συλλογή του (26.000 τίτλους) στην Αμερικανική Σχολή Κλασικών Σπουδών στην Αθήνα με τον όρο να στεγαστεί σε ειδικό κτήριο, να διασφαλιστεί ως παρακαταθήκη για τον ελληνικό λαό και να είναι ανοιχτή και προσιτή σε όλους τους επιστήμονες όλων των εθνών.

Η Γεννάδειος Βιβλιοθήκη είναι ένα θησαυροφυλάκιο βιβλίων, αρχείων και έργων τέχνης που αποτελούν μαρτυρίες για την κληρονομιά του Ελληνισμού από το τέλος της αρχαιότητας μέχρι τις μέρες μας. Στεγάζεται σε ένα μεγαλοπρεπές μαρμάρινο κτήριο στις πλαγιές του Λυκαβηττού και το όνομα «Γεννάδειον» τιμά τη μνήμη του Γεώργιου Γεννάδιου (1786-1854), πατέρα του ιδρυτή της βιβλιοθήκης, Ιωάννη Γεννάδιου (1844-1932). Διπλωμάτης, λόγιος και βιβλιόφιλος, ο Ι. Γεννάδιος διακρινόταν πάντα από την έντονη και γεμάτη πάθος αφοσίωσή του στην Ελλάδα.

Νέες προσκτήσεις επεκτείνουν τις συλλογές του Ιωάννη Γεννάδιου. O κήπος της Γενναδείου δίνει ανάσα στο ασφυκτικό κέντρο της πόλης και οι συλλογές έχουν πλέον ξεπεράσει τους 145.000 τόμους και συνεχίζουν να αυξάνονται με γοργό ρυθμό.

Ολοκληρώθηκε η υποβολή συμμετοχών στο μαθητικό διαγωνισμό της Γενναδείου Βιβλιοθήκης με θέμα «Ο τόπος μου», που διοργανώθηκε με αφορμή τη συμπλήρωση 100 χρόνων λειτουργίας της!

Κάθε τόπος κρύβει μια ιστορία — και μέσα από τα μάτια των μαθητών, αυτές οι ιστορίες ζωντάνεψαν με μοναδικό τρόπο.

Θερμά συγχαρητήρια σε όλους τους μαθητές και τις μαθήτριες για τα εμπνευσμένα έργα τους, καθώς και στους εκπαιδευτικούς που καθοδήγησαν δημιουργικά την προσπάθειά τους.

Οι νικητές και οι νικήτριες θα τιμηθούν σε ειδική εκδήλωση στις 26 Σεπτεμβρίου, ενώ τα βραβευθέντα έργα θα αναρτηθούν στον ιστότοπο της Γενναδείου Βιβλιοθήκης.

Submissions for the student competition organized by the Gennadius Library on the theme “The Place where I come from”, as part of the celebration of the Library’s 100 years of operation, have been completed!

Every place holds a story — and through the eyes of students, those stories came to life in remarkable ways. Congratulations to all the students for their inspiring projects, and to the teachers who guided them throughout this creative journey.

The winners will be honored at a special award ceremony on September 26, and their works will be featured on the Gennadius Library website.
