DF REVIEWS: DISCOLORED 2
🇬🇧 Restoring life in a world drained of color

A visually gorgeous surreal adventure (in more or less the same vein as the first Discolored game, but this time with optional enemies and bosses), in which we are trying to return color to an entire world rendered completely gray and almost lifeless by a malicious organization.

To achieve our goal, we use color prisms and various literal/material and figurative/concept tools that we gather along the way. At first sight, the mechanics of the successive puzzles we encounter may appear as not making too much sense, but once we get immersed in the game's structural and conceptual universe, everything starts to fall into place.

On a side note, I admit I was somewhat confused by the player's point of view in relation to the characters we meet during the game. Are we supposed to be "embodying" the science/agent lady in the red suit? The young man whose photo we find in the office desk at the beginning? Or to be alternating between the two? Perhaps something eluded me, but I had the feeling it was not made entirely clear, plus the sudden shift from first to third person towards the end.

Other than that, the central idea is brilliant, with an interesting philosophical subtext, some instances of clever tongue-in-cheek humor and meta-elements I personally enjoyed. I just finished Discolored 2 in Safe Mode (without the enemies) and will soon give Standard Mode a try.

🇬🇷 (Ξανα)χρωματίζοντας έναν Γκρίζο, Άψυχο Κόσμο

Εικαστικά εξαίσια σουρεαλιστική περιπέτεια (στο ίδιο περίπου στυλ με το πρώτο παιχνίδι της σειράς Discolored, αυτήν τη φορά με προαιρετικούς εχθρούς και bosses) διά χειρός Jason Godbey, στην οποία προσπαθούμε να επαναφέρουμε τα χρώματα σ' έναν κόσμο που μια κακόβουλη οργάνωση τον έχει καταντήσει ολότελα γκρίζο και οριακά άψυχο, δίχως καμιά ζωντάνια και χαρά. Προκειμένου να επιτύχουμε το σκοπό μας, χρησιμοποιούμε χρωματικά πρίσματα και διάφορα κυριολεκτικά/υλικά και μεταφορικά/άυλα εργαλεία και αντικείμενα τα οποία συλλέγουμε στην πορεία. Εκ πρώτης όψεως, οι μηχανισμοί των γρίφων που διαδοχικά συναντάμε δίνουν ίσως την εντύπωση ότι δεν έχουν ιδιαίτερη λογική, αλλά μόλις συλλάβουμε τη δομή του παιχνιδιού και αφεθούμε να μας εμβυθίσει στο σύμπαν των ιδεών του, τα πάντα αρχίζουν να αποκτούν το νόημά τους. Ομολογώ, εντούτοις, πως με μπέρδεψε ελαφρώς η οπτική γωνία (το "βλέμμα της κάμερας") ως προς τους χαρακτήρες που εμφανίζονται στην πορεία και δεν μας συστήνονται παρά υπαινικτικά και αόριστα. Ποιον ακριβώς υποτίθεται ότι "ενσαρκώνει" ο παίκτης; Την κυρία με την κόκκινη στολή, μεταξύ μυστικής πράκτορα και επιστήμονα; Τον νεαρό του οποίου τη φωτογραφία έχουμε από νωρίς ανακαλύψει στο γραφείο; Ή θεωρούμε εξαρχής δεδομένη μια "σιωπηρή" εναλλαγή ανάμεσά τους; Ίσως μου διαφεύγει κάτι, μα είχα την αίσθηση πως δεν υπήρξε η απαραίτητη σαφήνεια στο θέμα αυτό - συν την αιφνίδια μετάβαση από πρώτο σε τρίτο πρόσωπο κοντά στο τέλος. Κατά τα άλλα, πανέξυπνο το κεντρικό εύρημα με το ενδιαφέρον φιλοσοφικό του υπόβαθρο, καθώς και με στιγμές ευφυώς υπόγειου χιούμορ και μετα-στοιχεία που προσωπικά με συνάρπασαν. Μόλις τερμάτισα το Discolored 2 σε Safe Mode ("ασφαλή" λειτουργία, χωρίς τους εχθρούς) και σύντομα θα δοκιμάσω τη Standard ("κανονική").

DF REVIEWS: MARKUS RITTER - GHOSTS OF THE PAST
Legacy of the Schattenjaegers, Continued

After a very promising demo/prologue (The Lost Family), the Markus Ritter storyline now continues with the main game, Ghosts of the Past. A lovingly conceived, beautifully designed and executed tribute to Jane Jensen's iconic Gabriel Knight universe, the Markus Ritter games feature the eponymous character and his estranged cousin, Roberta - another honorable allusion to full motion video (FMV) game pioneer and Jensen's early collaborator, Roberta Williams.

Playing along some of the themes and construction of the second instalment in the Gabriel Knight trilogy, The Beast Within (the only one in the saga using the FMV technology), Ghosts of the Past throws Markus and Roberta into the eternal battle between the forces of light and darkness, as Schattenjaegers (Shadow Hunters) with the hereditary superpower - and duty - to recognize and fight evil which appears in deceptively ordinary human forms. Like his legendary ancestor and predecessor, Markus has to face a fatal dilemma when he finally finds true love, but the Shadows have ominous plans for him and the future of his new relationship.

Despite the obvious and oblique references to the Gabriel Knight universe (with many clever and enjoyable Easter eggs), Markus Ritter - Ghosts of the Past is, in its own right, an exceptionally well-rounded Indie game with original elements, interesting quirky characters and a captivating story. The controls are the same as in The Lost Family demo, but have been considerably smoothed out. The scenery and soundtrack are gorgeous, and in most instances act as organic ingredients of the plot.

In the Maze of a Genius Mind

Very beautifully designed, as all the games in this series, based (albeit somewhat loosely) on historical figures and facts. Game mechanics are reasonable but also challenging and a thoroughly researched blend of history and fiction is always a treat for the players who enjoy this kind of plot.
