Λένε πως μέσα στη φωνή της Ann O’aro, βγαίνει ένα τραγούδι που αγκαλιάζει τον ασυμβίβαστο αγώνα της για την αποαποικιοποίηση του σώματος. Ένα τραγούδι που κοιτά στα μάτια το σκοτάδι, χωρίς να φοβάται τις σκιές, ένα τραγούδι-πρό(σ)κληση στην υπόθεση των Lagon Nwar, εκεί που συναντώνται οι γειωμένες μνήμες από την Μπουρκίνα Φάσο, τα avant garde ξέφτια των Tri-Collectif, η ορμητική Creole παράδοση, η ακατέργαστη afro jazz, κι η λοξή ευρωπαϊκή pop. Στον παρθενικό του δίσκο που μόλις συμπλήρωσε ένα χρόνο ζωής, αυτό το δαιμονισμένο γαλλικό κουαρτέτο δεν συνηγόρησε ποτέ με την έννοια των συνόρων. Έχει κυλήσει πολύς καιρός από το ευπώλητο A Night Like This. Εκείνο το smooth pop cd που κυκλοφόρησε το 1993 και με το οποίο μας συστήθηκε η Rebecka Törnqvist , μπορεί να μην έμπαινε στην κατηγορία της «καθαρόαιμης» jazz, αλλά χάρη στις επιρροές της ερμηνεύτριας, έριξε τη σπίθα ώστε να εξελιχθεί και τελικά να αποτιμηθεί ως η πιο κομβική καλλιτέχνιδα που αναζωπύρωσε το ενδιαφέρον για τις νεαρές γυναικείες τζαζ φωνές στη Σουηδία των 90s. Από την πρώιμη laid back jazz pop φάση της μέχρι και σήμερα έχει καθιερωθεί ως μία από τις πιο επιδραστικές καλλιτέχνιδες και τραγουδοποιούς της Σουηδίας. It’s been a while since 1993 and the commercial success of A Night Like This, the smooth pop cd that introduced us to Rebecka Törnqvist. Although very far from being pure jazz, the album was so deeply rooted in the artist’s jazz influences that it reignited interest in young female jazz vocalists and jazz in general, elevating Törnqvist to a pivotal figure in the Swedish jazz scene. From her early laid-back jazz pop to today’s more mature explorations, she has established herself as one of the most influential artists and song makers in Sweden. Along with Johan Graden, a highly sought-after pianist in the classical music and European contemporary jazz scenes, and multi-instrumentalist Jari Haapalainen, they will be taking the stage of Athens Jazz to mess around with familiar pop forms, creating a fragile and lyrical sound that still manages to stay rough around the edges.

Και πως να μην είναι η headline δύναμη της πιο χορευτικά ιντριγκαδόρικης φετινής ημέρας του Athens Jazz; Εδώ ολόκληρο Resident Advisor αποθέωσε το κλασικό, φαινομενικά ροκ στήσιμο της μπάντας (κιθάρα, μπάσο και ντραμς), ως μια live μηχανή που φτιάχνει αναλογική techno για να σου ψήσει τον εγκέφαλο! Σε πραγματικό χρόνο, χωρίς καθόλου υπολογιστές ή looper, καταθέτοντας αντισυμβατικά, λεπτομερή κι απροσδόκητα 4/4 κατά μέτωπο. Δεν είναι τυχαίο πως το αυστριακό τρίο έχει πάρει παραμάζωμα φεστιβάλ όπως τα Roskilde, Sónar, Mutek, Melt! και Stop Making Sense, παρασύροντας την ίδια στιγμή αβίαστα τους θαμώνες χορευτικών τοπόσημων όπως τα Fabric και Berghain. Στο όποιο φαντασιακό ερώτημα μπορεί να έθετε το εκλεκτικό περιοδικό Wire για το πως ιδανικά αποτυπώνεται η αποφασιστική σωματικότητα μιας μπάντας, δίχως να υποκύπτει στην ψυχρή αφαίρεση της techno, οι Elektro Guzzi με συνεκτική ακρίβεια έχουν ήδη δώσει τη δική τους αμετάκλητη απάντηση. Αυτό που έρχεται, δεν έχει καμία σχέση με την jazz (ή την techno) που ξέρετε!

Ακόμη κι αν ακούγεται αντιφατικό, εδώ έχουμε καθαρόαιμη nu-jazz από τα σπλάχνα της Gen-Y! Το τελευταίο τους single με τίτλο “Krill Bill” είναι ένας οδοστρωτήρας φτιαγμένος για χτιστά κλαμπίστικα sets, μα αυτό δεν έκανε στα αλήθεια καμιά εντύπωση σε όσους γνώριζαν το It’s Alive του 2024, ένα δίσκο-δυναμίτη που με την ίδια χαρακτηριστική άνεση που τσιμπολογούσε υπνωτικά beats από τις ιδανικότερες minimal techno ονειρώξεις, την επόμενη στιγμή καταβρόχθιζε λαίμαργα δαιδαλώδη prog jazz riffs. Αυτή είναι η πρόσφορη και ξεκάθαρη λέξη για τον Ιταλό τρομπονίστα Gianluca Petrella που ξεκίνησε να ξεφυσά το τρομπόνι του ήδη από τα μέσα της δεκαετίας του ’90, πριν γίνει ο ίδιος leader από τις αρχές των zeroes, με μερικές σπουδαίες καταγραφές στους καταλόγους της ECM, Ninja Tune και της Blue Note. The intergalactic, afrofuturistic legacy of Sun Ra inspires and guides Petrella’s Cosmic Renaissance project like a compass that points without fail to the north star of radical cosmic freedom and unrestricted nu soulful jazz. Από τα λονδρέζικα 100 club και Jazz Cafe, μέχρι το φεστιβάλ του Montreux, τo jazzy hip-hop fusion τρίο από τη Βουδαπέστη, μόλις κυκλοφόρησε το δίσκο Montreal, και φτάνει στην Αθήνα την κατάλληλη στιγμή, έπειτα κι από το πολυπαιγμένο Still Blunted του 2024. Άλλωστε δεν αργεί o καιρός, κι οι λόγοι, που θα βλέπουμε τους Jazzbois στον ίδιο βάθρο με τους Domi and JD Beck αλλά και την αγαπημένη Nala Sinephro.

Beloved by Gilles Peterson and aficionados of modern sound everywhere, this trio will light up the Athens Jazz stage with their expansive cosmic beats and endless hip hop cool. Jazzbois are not for the narrow-minded purists. They play for the new jazzheads who are not intimidated by the war cries hidden in Herbie Hancock’s powerful grooves and love to imagine Thundercat jamming with J Dilla in a musical space where fusion can co-exist with laid-back, lofi versions of songs like “Windmills of Your Mind”. This jazzy hip-hop fusion trio from Budapest have already performed multiple sold out shows at some of the most important venues on the continent, from 100 club and Jazz Café in London to the Montreux Festival. Having just released their latest album, Montreal, they are arriving in Athens at the peak of their career after the success of their 2024 album Still Blunted. At this pace, Jazzbois will soon earn a place in our hearts next to the likes of Domi and JD Beck and Nala Sinephro.

Κι αν τελικά δεν υπάρχει ανισορροπία μεταξύ future jazz, drum n’ bass και contemporary jazzy hip hop; Αν δηλαδή η περίπτωση της DIY τετράδας των Πολωνών Kosmonauci , δεν κουβαλά το βάρος των ιδιωμάτων, και τον καταδικαστικό καθορισμό των genres, αλλά μέσα από την τυχαιότητα του αυτοσχεδιασμού και τη νεανική αφέλεια έχει βάλει σκοπό να μας μαζέψει τα σκαλπ; Η απάντηση δεν είναι άμεση και προφανής, το βέβαιο είναι πως οι πολυρυθμικές μελωδίες της μπάντας έχουν ήδη κάνει αίσθηση σε φημισμένα πολωνικά φεστιβάλ τζαζ, όπως τα Jazz Jantar Festival, Bielska Zadymka Jazzowa και Młyn Jazz Festival, κερδίζοντας την αναγνώριση τόσο από το κοινό όσο και από τους κριτικούς. Από την κυκλοφορία του ντεμπούτου άλμπουμ τους, περιοδεύουν εκτενώς στην Ευρώπη, ενώ με το ολόφρεσκο «δύσκολο» δεύτερο lp τους Brudna - Bielizna που κυκλοφόρησε τον Απρίλιο, καταλαβαίνει κανείς πως μια επί σκηνής εμφάνιση τους θα είναι το δίχως άλλο αχατρογράφητα αποκαλυπτική.

Can a band skillfully blend future jazz, drum ‘n’ bass and contemporary jazzy hip hop to concoct something excitingly new? What if the Polish DIY quartet Kosmonauci, unburdened by the weight of idioms and the restrictions of genres, can blow our expectations out of the water through the randomness of improvisation and the sheer innocence of youth? The answers to these questions might not be obvious or linear, but one thing is certain: the band’s polyrhythmic melodies have already caused a stir in famous Polish jazz festivals, like Jazz Jantar Festival, Bielska Zadymka Jazzowa and Młyn Jazz Festival, getting praise from both audiences and critics. Having toured their debut album all over Europe and determined to beat the sophomore slump with their second LP Brudna – Bielizna, they will be arriving at Athens Jazz for a live performance that promises to take us on an experimental ride into uncharted musical waters.
