Built in the 5th century BC, the Propylaia has been the grand gateway to the Acropolis for almost 2,500 years. Our tip? Go early. The light is beautiful, the air is cooler, and for a little while, Athens feels almost entirely yours.

The Acropolis Museum was designed by Bernard Tschumi with Greek architect Michael Photiadis to give the treasures of the Acropolis a home worthy of their history. Glass, concrete and marble meet ancient ruins beneath the building, while the Parthenon Gallery turns towards the Acropolis itself, a rather elegant conversation between past and present. And from Periscope? About a 20-minute walk through the city.

Every hour, on the hour, the Evzones perform one of Athens’ most distinctive rituals in front of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Syntagma. The slow, almost theatrical steps are part of a tradition that pays tribute to the Greek soldiers who fought in the War of Independence. Even their iconic uniform carries history: the fustanella, tsarouchia, and embroidered waistcoat all draw on traditional dress of the period. On Sundays at 11am, the ceremony becomes a larger spectacle, with a full ceremonial unit and military band.
