A minifigure portrait of the late former director of the Museum, Dimitris , has gone on permanent display at the museum in Athens, honoring the scholar widely credited with shaping the institution and championing the return of the sculptures to Greece, The Greek Herald reported.

The miniature tribute was created by Australian LEGO classicist, pop artist and historical archivist Liam D. Jensen and installed inside the museum’s LEGO model of the Acropolis in the Kids Corner on the second floor.

Museum officials contacted Jensen shortly after Pandermalis’ death in 2022, requesting an additional minifigure portrait to be placed within the model as a memorial to his legacy.

The large-scale LEGO Acropolis was designed by Australian LEGO Certified Professional Ryan McNaught, widely known as “The Brickman.” Built with about 120,000 bricks, the model was donated to the museum in 2014 by the University of Sydney’s University Museums.

Pandermalis, a prominent archaeologist, played a pivotal role in establishing the Acropolis Museum and was a leading advocate in Greece’s long-running campaign for the return of the Parthenon Sculptures from the British Museum in London.

Jensen had previously created a minifigure portrait of Pandermalis in 2019 as part of his Brick Classicists Empire (BCE) project, which recreates historical figures using LEGO minifigures. That portrait was sent to Pandermalis and, according to museum staff, was warmly received by him and his family, who still have it.

After Pandermalis’ death, museum staff asked Jensen to create another portrait specifically for display in the LEGO Acropolis model.

Jensen said he felt honored to contribute to the tribute.

“I was very honored and touched to make and donate the special minifigure portrait to the Acropolis Museum,” he told The Greek Herald.

“As always with these BCE minifigure portraits, I try to keep the design simple yet characteristic of the person who is being portrayed in the medium of a LEGO minifigure. With professor Pandermalis, I wanted it to have straightforward dignity with a hint of joyful enthusiasm, reflecting great and astonishing work over his lifetime.”

The nearly 1,900-year-old Odeon of Herodes Atticus under the Acropolis, which is used for an annual summer music festival, will close for at least three years for an extensive facelift that will include conservation and restoration.

The Culture Ministry said in a statement that the project that will start this summer would include overhauling facilities for the public and artists taking part in the highly popular shows held in the remains of the Roman building. A new, less intrusive lighting system will also be installed.

Two artifacts found at a lake shore in , are the oldest wooden to be uncovered so far and date back 430,000 years.

One is a spindly stick about 2 1/2 feet (80 centimeters) long that could have been used for digging in the mud. The other is a smaller, more mysterious handheld chunk of willow or poplar wood that may have been used to shape stone tools, according to research published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Scientists think ancient humans wielded a whole litany of tools made from stone, bone and wood. But it’s particularly difficult to find evidence of wooden tools today because wood rots so quickly. Such tools are only preserved in specific environments like in ice, caves or underwater.

The newest tools, found in Greece’s Megalopolis basin, were possibly buried quickly by sediment and preserved by a wet environment over time. For years, researchers have found other remnants at the site, including stone tools and elephant bones with cuts on them. While scientists didn’t directly date the wooden tools, the site is about 430,000 years old, which provides insight into the objects’ age.

Archaeologists have uncovered the wreck of a pleasure boat dating back roughly 2,000 years in the bay of , Egypt, the European Institute of Underwater Archaeology (IEASM) has announced.

The vessel’s keel, measuring 35 meters long and about seven meters wide, was found at the bottom of the harbor of the royal island of , now submerged. The island once hosted a palace and a temple dedicated to Isis during the city’s Greek and Roman periods.

Inscriptions in Greek carved on a structural reinforcement beam of the vessel date it to the first half of the 1st century AD, suggesting it was likely built in Alexandria itself.

The luxury yacht had a single, lavishly decorated cabin and was rowed, according to the institute. IEASM researchers highlighted that it belonged to a tradition of pleasure ships used by the elite, recalling the massive “floating palaces” of the Ptolemies. One such vessel was famously used by to show Julius the sights of Egypt.

Strabo had visited the Egyptian city around 29-25BC and wrote of such boats: “These vessels are luxuriously fitted out and used by the royal court for excursions; and the crowd of revelers who go down from Alexandria by the canal to the public festivals; for every day and every night is crowded with people on the boats who play the flute and dance without restraint and with extreme licentiousness.”

"The Gods of Olympus" from our pocketbooks: http://sigmapublications.com/mth_en_en1.html

Get the whole set of our 8 Greek Mythology pocketbooks and get ready to dive into the most fascinating stories of Ancient Greece: https://www.sigmapublications.com/mth_en_en0.html

The twelve gods of , as seen in the most important and loveliest of the myths surrounding them, are presented in this book with the light touch and clear eye of the distinguished student of Greek mythology Menelaos Stephanides. Combining the joy of learning with the pleasure of tales well told, this enjoyable volume will give its readers an amusing introduction to the all-too-mortal gods of the ancient Greeks. For in Greek mythology the gods are very far from perfect and have as many human weaknesses as supernatural powers. It is precisely their blend of power and frailties that gives mythology in its Greek form the lasting appeal that has drawn people to the stories of its gods for the past three thousand years. Superhuman battles with fearsome creatures or forces of nature such as Typhon, the loves and infidelities of , cunning, hatred, friendship, wisdom and generosity are all interwoven in an entrancing tangle which Menelaos Stephanides unwinds and weaves into clear and simple language. The myths are arranged so that each god is given one chapter, while the first chapter is devoted to 's cosmogony, the Greek version of the birth of the world. Suitable for all ages.
