The AXIOS Project
The AXIOS Project is an action hub galvanizing Greek-Americans to tackle climate and environmental issues in Greece.
“It was a hell. It was an absolute hell.”
In this clip from our documentary, Greece: A Climate Hotspot, Phil Noel-Baker reflects on the devastating realities of Greece’s wildfire crisis — the smoke-filled skies, unbearable heat, and the unimaginable moment when entire livelihoods disappear overnight.
For many across Greece, wildfires are not abstract headlines or distant environmental warnings. They are deeply personal losses felt in homes, villages, farms, and family histories passed down through generations.
As fire seasons across the Mediterranean grow longer and more intense, stories like these remind us what is truly at stake.

For thousands of years, olives have nourished Greek life. In kitchens, cultural traditions, and even in skincare, the olive remains one of Greece’s most enduring and valuable products.
But the future of this precious crop depends on the health of the land and climate it calls home. As heat waves and drought intensify, and wildfires grow more frequent and destructive, olive groves across Greece and the Mediterranean are increasingly at risk.
Addressing the root causes of extreme heat and wildfires, and supporting innovative and sustainable agricultural practices, we can help protect a crop that has shaped Greek life and culture for generations.
A warming Mediterranean. Record-breaking heat. Communities already feeling the consequences. Across Greece and Europe as a whole, the climate crisis is no longer theoretical — it is reshaping daily life in real time.
In our documentary, Greece: A Climate Hotspot, George Kremlis reminds us that climate change is not a distant warning for future generations alone — it is a present-day reality unfolding now.
George Kremlis served as Advisor to the Prime Minister on Energy, Environment, and Climate.
The future is coming faster than we think.

The AXIOS Project Co-Founder George Behrakis recently took the stage at the Delphi Economic Forum to moderate a discussion with Ambassador Geoffrey Pyatt, Afroditi Xydi (Executive Director of Deon Policy Institute), and other leading energy policy voices.
The conversation explored the evolving U.S.–Greece relationship around energy, including:
— Greece’s growing strategic importance as an energy crossroads for the United States, Europe, and the wider Eastern Mediterranean
— Greece’s extraordinary clean energy potential in solar, wind, and emerging technologies, and the importance of diversifying energy resources amid geopolitical conflicts and growing climate challenges
— The opportunity for Greeks of the global diaspora to help drive innovation, investment, and leadership in the energy transition
The AXIOS Project was proud to lead this conversation. There is a real opportunity for Greece to help shape a future of energy that advances innovation, security, and environmental stewardship. That’s what the AXIOS Project is working toward: connecting diaspora talent, networks, and resources with opportunities that can benefit Greece — and all of humanity.
“Greece, by being part of the Mediterranean, is a climate hotspot. That means that all the climate effects happen faster and they seem to have a greater intensity as compared to other parts of the planet.” - Costas Cartalis, Professor of Environmental & Climate Physics | University of Athens

204 years ago, Greece fought for its freedom—becoming a symbol of liberty, democracy, and the ideals that shaped the modern West.
At the AXIOS Project, we believe we are called to help protect the future of this special place.
From extreme heat and drought, to wildfires and marine biodiversity, the climate and environmental challenges facing Greece are real.
But so is the strength of the Greek people, both at home and across the global Greek diaspora.
We believe Greeks everywhere can unite around a shared responsibility to protect the land, culture, and heritage we have inherited, and to help ensure Greece continues to thrive for generations to come.
Χρόνια πολλά, Ελλάδα. 🇬🇷

The Mediterranean Sea covers less than 1% of the world’s oceans, yet it supports nearly 10% of global marine biodiversity. Thousands of species live beneath its iconic blue waters.
For Greece, the sea plays an integral role in sustaining the country’s economy and way of life. It supports fisheries, anchors the tourism economy, shapes local climates, and forms a deep part of the nation’s culture and identity.
Protecting these ecosystems means safeguarding the natural heritage that has defined Greek life for thousands of years. Let’s make sure the Mediterranean remains vibrant for generations to come.
“If you want to bring Greeks together, energy and the environment are an amazing place to start. Everyone loves Greece’s natural heritage. And what we’re trying to do at AXIOS is build an action hub to galvanize Greeks of the diaspora in America.
"All of this is about building a movement — identifying problems, coordinating the Greek diaspora around them, and actually solving them.”
AXIOS Project Co-Founders recently joined Grecian Echoes to share the mission behind the AXIOS Project and why climate and environmental issues can be powerful forces for galvanizing the Greek diaspora.
For more than 70 years, Grecian Echoes has been a trusted voice for the 250,000-strong Greek-American community of New England, connecting generations through culture, dialogue, and civic life.
Huge thanks to Ted Demetriades and Nikoleta Papadogianni for having AXIOS for the conversation.
