Summer Life in Athens Begins
June is when Athens shifts into full summer mode. Days are longer, nightlife gets livelier, and the city’s rhythm changes—locals often avoid the hottest hours and come alive in the evening. You’ll notice more rooftop venues, later dinners, and a general “let’s stay out” feeling after sunset. If you’re visiting, plan your days smartly: do outdoor sightseeing early, pause midday, then enjoy the city later. One of the best parts of Athens in June is how social it feels—squares, streets, and cafés are full of energy. It’s a great month to experience Athens as a living city, not just a checklist of sights. 🌇

Theatre of Dionysus
Nestled on the foothill of the Acropolis lies the theatre of Dionysus. Originally part of a sanctuary dedicated to the god of wine and revelry, it has existed in some capacity since at least the mid-6th century BCE. It was the main site for the city-wide festival of Dionysia, and remained in use continually until the Roman period. It later fell into disuse and wasn’t rediscovered and restored until the 19th century CE.

The significance of this theatre is not just in its longevity, but also in its role in the establishment of the art of drama as it is known today. Western theatre has its roots in large part in the plays written and performed here as part of the Great Dionysia. Visiting Ancient Sites Comfortably
Ancient sites in Athens are incredible, but they can be physically demanding if you’re not prepared. Start early when possible, bring water, and wear footwear with strong grip—smooth stone and marble can be slippery. Sun protection matters even in spring, so pack sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. Take your time: these places aren’t meant to be rushed, and short breaks can make the experience far more enjoyable. Also, keep in mind that some areas are uneven, so watch your step and give yourself extra time. A calm pace helps you notice details—carvings, views, and layers of history—that many visitors miss when they hurry through. 🏛️

What May Feels Like in Athens
May is a sweet spot in Athens. The weather is warm but usually not overwhelming, evenings feel comfortable, and the city’s outdoor life is fully active. You’ll see locals spending more time outside—parks, rooftops, open-air cafés—and the atmosphere feels upbeat. It’s also a great month for long sightseeing days because you can walk comfortably without the intense summer heat. If you like photography, May light is beautiful: clear skies, bright colors, and golden sunsets. Practical tip: start your main sightseeing earlier in the day and keep a slower, relaxed evening plan. Athens in May feels energetic but not chaotic—ideal for first-time visitors. 🌞

Happy May day!

The sun is shining, the bees are buzzing and house doors all over are decorated with flower wreaths. A custom popular across Europe, in Greece it has its roots on the spring festivals dedicated to the goddesses Demeter and Persephone. Its modern iteration hails to the period between the 12th and 15th century CE, when Frankish influence moved the early spring celebrations from March to May.

Traditionally, a wreath is constructed from greens and wildflowers, either the night before or on May 1st and hung from the house’s front door to invite good fortune and ward off the evil eye. The wreath was then displayed until the 24th of June, when it was burnt in the bonfires on St John’s feast day. Of course, in some areas, it was just as traditional to attempt to steal the wreaths from as many houses as possible, adding a somewhat chaotic element to an otherwise tame tradition…

Greek souvlaki! If you have heard of nothing else Greek, chances are these words have crossed your sight at some point. Part of the local cuisine since antiquity, the quintessential meat-on-a-stick remains as popular as ever.

As with all beloved classics the recipe has not changed much since antiquity where it is described in contemporary sources as “pieces of meat, pita bread, cheese and dill”. In its modern incarnation it is served wrapped in pitta bread, with tzatziki sauce and onion (later additions include tomato and fried potatoes). Its modern resurgence started in 1924 in Nikaia, and then Monastiraki square in Athens. As a sit-down meal with beer on the side (Fanta for the kids) or carried by one of the hundreds of delivery drivers whizzing through the streets of Athens, it is an essential part of any visit to the capital.

Why Walking Is the Best Way to Explore Athens
Athens is made for walking—especially if you enjoy discovering little surprises. Many historic areas connect naturally, and on foot you’ll notice details that buses and taxis miss: small ruins tucked behind fences, interesting street art, local pastry shops, and hidden viewpoints. Walking also helps you understand how ancient and modern Athens overlap in everyday life. A practical tip: wear shoes with good grip and take breaks in the shade, especially as spring warms up. Try planning a simple route between two landmarks, but leave extra time to wander. In Athens, the “in-between” streets often become the best part of the day. 🚶‍♂️

Greek Easter Traditions Explained for Travelers

Greek Easter (Pascha) is the biggest religious and cultural celebration of the year, and April is often the month when visitors can experience these traditions firsthand. Even if you’re not familiar with Orthodox customs, Athens offers an accessible and enriching way to explore this unique moment.

Holy Week: A city in quiet anticipation
The week leading up to Easter is filled with processions, hymns, and a peaceful rhythm across neighborhoods. Churches are beautifully decorated, and the atmosphere is deeply cultural.
Good Friday & the Epitaph procession
In the evening, locals follow candlelit processions around their neighborhoods. Travelers are always welcome to observe respectfully — it’s a powerful and emotional experience.

Midnight Resurrection service
On Saturday night, thousands gather outside churches holding candles. At midnight, the city lights up with “Christos Anesti,” fireworks, and shared joy. Even if you do not participate religiously, it’s a beautiful cultural event to witness.

Traditional Easter foods
Tsoureki (sweet bread), red eggs, and the famous Sunday lamb on the spit define the culinary side of Easter.
