What would Facebook have looked like in ancient Greece? Probably something like this. At Delphi, the famous Polygonal Wall supporting the terrace of the Temple of Apollo is covered with more than 800 ancient inscriptions.

Long before timelines and status updates, people carved public notices, legal acts and official announcements into stone, where everyone could see them and where they would remain part of the public record.

Tip: When visiting Delphi, don’t walk past the Polygonal Wall too quickly. Get close and look for the inscriptions carved across its surface. You’re essentially reading one of antiquity’s most public “walls”.

There’s more to Naxos than beaches. Head inland and the island changes completely. Stone-built villages, shaded squares, old churches and mountain roads reveal a quieter, more traditional side of Naxos.

Tip: Make time for Filoti, one of Naxos’ best-known mountain villages, built on the slopes of Mount Zas. Wander through its narrow streets, stop beneath the plane trees in the main square, and stay for a coffee or a local meal before continuing your village-hopping route.

Just 22km from Chania, Seitan Limani is one of Crete’s most dramatic beaches: a narrow turquoise cove tucked between steep cliffs, reached after a short but fairly steep hike down.

Tip: Visit late in the afternoon, when the crowds begin to thin and the cove feels much calmer. Wear proper shoes for the 20-minute descent, bring water, and give yourself enough time for the climb back up before it gets dark.

Just outside Stemnitsa, the Monastery of Timios Prodromos is one of Arcadia’s most striking sights. Part of the complex is built directly into the rock, overlooking the gorge below, in a setting shaped by centuries of monastic life.

Tip: Don’t stop at the monastery. Continue along the marked trail through Lousios Gorge towards the Philosophou Monastery for one of the most memorable hikes in the area.

Just 25km from Chania, Lake Kournas is an easy escape into nature and a great addition to a family holiday in western Crete. Surrounded by mountains and greenery, its calm waters make it an easy-going stop for both kids and adults.

Tip: Rent a pedal boat and head out onto the lake to look for turtles and ducks, then end your visit with lunch at one of the lakeside tavernas. An easy half-day adventure the whole family can enjoy.
