Today marks the Holy Sunday of Easter.
For the Greeks, this is the most important holiday of the year and one of its most iconic symbols are the *red eggs*. This is an ancient tradition, along with the candles, the processions, the ceremonies in the churches and the sweet bread known as Tsuraki.

In Greek Easter, the eggs are boiled and dyed red in specific because of a religious symbolism ❤️🥚

The meaning is:
• The red color symbolizes the blood of Jesus that was shed during the crucifixion.
• The egg itself symbolizes new life and rebirth, i.e. the resurrection of Jesus.
• When the eggs are broken in the traditional game "τσούγκρισμα" (tsogrisma), it symbolizes the opening of the grave and the victory over death

On Easter Sunday they are used for the game of "Tzogrisma": two players, each of them holding a red egg (boiled! (Don't ask me how I know) and dyed), and they launch the eggs in their hands at each other. The goal is to crack the opponent's egg - without cracking yours, of course.
When the eggs are launched, one of them announces "Christos Ansti" (Jesus is resurrected) and the other replies "Alytos Ansti!" (He really got up!)
The player who successfully cracks the eggs of the other players is declared the winner, and according to belief he will be blessed with good luck throughout the year.
