🌍 World Environment Day

Today is a reminder that protecting our oceans and seas isn’t just about preserving marine life—it’s also about keeping our waterways safe for everyone who depends on them.

Over the last two days alone, we have recovered two abandoned fishing pots from the water. One of these pots had more than 30 metres of line floating on the surface, creating a significant hazard for passing vessels. Both pots contained a number of hermit crabs, which we carefully removed and rehomed before disposing of the gear responsibly.

Lost, abandoned, or discarded pots, traps, and fishing lines can continue to “ghost fish” for years, trapping crabs, fish, octopus, and other marine species long after they have been forgotten. Marine animals can become entangled, injured, or killed, while sensitive habitats may be damaged as abandoned gear moves across the seabed.

The impact doesn’t stop below the surface. Floating ropes and abandoned pots also pose a serious risk to boaters. Lines can foul propellers, damage engines, affect steering, and leave vessels stranded at sea, creating costly repairs and potentially dangerous situations for crews and passengers.

Our recent recoveries are a powerful reminder that every piece of abandoned gear removed from the water makes a difference. By reporting lost equipment, retrieving abandoned gear where it is safe to do so, and disposing of fishing materials responsibly, we can help protect both marine ecosystems and those who work and travel on the water.

This World Environment Day, let’s remember that cleaner oceans and seas mean safer oceans and seas —for wildlife and for people.

The Great Gibraltar Beach Clean Up was a fantastic success and a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when the community comes together with a shared purpose.

Our sincere thanks go first and foremost to Lewis Stagetto and The Nautilus Project for organising such a well-executed initiative and for inviting us to be involved. Your leadership, commitment to marine conservation, and ability to mobilise volunteers continue to make a tangible difference to Gibraltar’s coastline.

A big thank you as well to all the volunteers and participants who gave their time and effort on the day. The turnout, teamwork, and positive energy were outstanding, and every bag collected represents a direct impact on protecting our local environment.

We’re proud to have taken part and look forward to supporting future initiatives that help keep Gibraltar’s beaches clean and thriving. 🌊🌿

Join us for The Great Gibraltar Beach Clean Up on Wednesday 11th February, in association with The Nautilus Project, and help protect Gibraltar’s underwater environment.

⏱ Clean-up time: 9:00 am – 12:00 pm
📍 Rosia Bay or Dive Charters Gibraltar

Meeting points:

8:45 am at the dive centre – for divers who require equipment
9:30 am at Rosia Bay – for divers who only need tanks and weights

⚠️ Underwater participants must be qualified
