PARENTS ARE PAYING EXORBITANT FEES FOR PROSPECTUS DUE TO POOR SUPPERVUSION BY GOVERNMENT-RESEARCH CONDUCTED BY CONCERNED PARENTS FOR FREE SHS GHANA REVEALS

A research Conducted by an Education Think- Thank ; Concerned Parents for Free SHS Ghana has revealed that poor supervision by Government Institutions mandated to monitor the second Cycle Schools in the country paving way for some headmasters/Mistresses to charge Parents exorbitant fees when purchasing prospectus for their wards especially in the first year.

The research focused on Four thematic areas namely; Purchasing of prospectus in Schools,Payment of huge PTA Dues and Development levies as well as Protocol Admissions for Students who were not placed in their preferred schools and Poor Feeding of Students*

After visiting some selected Schools across the country in the last week of March 2023 ,it was realised that Some Schools requested for Paints ,Cement, Iron rods, Iron sheets etc whiles others converted theirs to money for Parents which has deterred alot of Parents to enrol their wards in the required Senior High Schools in the Country.

Secondly, the research also revealed that some Schools were charging huge PTA Dues,Development Levies and Extra Classes Fees which have also discouraged some Parents to enrol their wards.

It was also realised in the research that despite the Computerised Schools Selection Placement System(CSSPS), some schools resorted to only protol admission which has defeated the purpose of its introduction making the less endowed School vacant .

Another serious Problem in the current Free SHS programme is the feeding component which some parents think is inadequate since some of them are asked to pay feeding intervention for their wards.

As a result of the above research, the leadership of Concerned Parents for Free SHS Ghana have suggested lasting solutions to solve the problems in the following ways:

1.Government Should come out with one common standard Propectus for all Second Cycle Schools in the Country and avoid adding personal items to be used by students in the prospectus and insist no school should sell an item in the school for students to buy

2.Government should make sure PTA and Development levies shouldn't exceed GH 200 threshold per student by straightening its Supervision

3.Protocol Admission should be scrapped to allow proper proportion of the CSSPS

4.Charging Parents for feeding intervention of their wards should be scrapped and introduce a policy that will allow buffer stock company to add staple food of a particular Region to their menu and make sure there's proper Supervision during the distribution of Food items*.

The leadership of the group have finally concluded that the Minister of Education and the Director General of Ghana Education Service should collaborate and strengthen proper Supervision to make Free SHS Policy a success by way of accounting to Ghanaians the expenditure on every Student for others to know its profitability.
