Evaluation Is About Learning, Not Finding Faults

When people hear the word 'evaluation', many immediately think of inspections, audits, or attempts to identify mistakes. At Northcode Ghana, we see evaluation differently.

For us, evaluation is not about looking for faults or assigning blame. Rather, it is an opportunity to learn, reflect, and understand what worked well, what could be improved, and how future interventions can create even greater impact. It is a process of listening to communities, partners, and stakeholders to understand the real changes that have taken place and the lessons that can guide future action.

Most importantly, we look for the stories that matter – the significant changes that remain long after a project has ended. We seek to understand how individuals, groups, and communities have been transformed, what new capacities have been built, how relationships have improved, and what local structures continue to function beyond project timelines. These stories often reveal the true value of development work and help us appreciate the lasting impact of community-led initiatives.

This approach was at the heart of Northcode Ghana's recent evaluation of the KAPOK CSO Small Grants Project, which provided support to five local civil society organisations to implement community-based peacebuilding and development initiatives. Through discussions with partners, stakeholders, and beneficiaries, the evaluation focused on capturing lessons learned, identifying opportunities for improvement, and documenting the changes that communities themselves consider most meaningful.

As the evaluation progresses, we are uncovering inspiring stories of resilience, local ownership, strengthened community structures, and positive change. These are the outcomes that truly matter and that continue to live on beyond project funding and implementation periods.

Stay tuned as we share some of the key findings, lessons learned, and most significant change stories emerging from the KAPOK CSO Small Grants Project.

In the town of Kaga Bandoro, Central African Republic, young people have been meeting to discuss ways of tackling conflict in their communities. One of the main causes of conflict is around the limited number of water pumps, often serving several thousand people at once. During a recent workshop facilitated by our local partner Catdec Coopération d’Appui Technique au Developpement Communautaire, two groups of young people presented their plans for tackling these conflict triggers to local authorities. This project is funded by the UN Peacebuilding Fund.

RUPAID celebrates Africa Day 2026
On Africa's day of celebration, marking 63 years of unity, integration, and development in the hands of the African Union, we, the members of RUPAID, join millions of other Africans on the continent in celebrating Africa Day 2026 with hope and determination for a peaceful, prosperous, and resilient Africa.
For Africa Day 2026, the theme for the African Union this year is "Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063," a call to ensure that everyone has access to safe water sources and safe toilet facilities to promote good health, harmony, sustainability, environmental preservation, and inclusive development in Africa.
Similarly, the theme "63 Years of Unity, Integration and Development" for Africa Day also signifies that the efforts to improve the quality of life of Africans through unity and development should be shared among us as Africans.
Our vision as an organization that aims at making resilient and empowered communities is fully aligned with the goals of Agenda 2063. Through our initiatives in community development, empowerment of young people and women, protection of the environment, sustainable livelihoods, and health care, we are convinced that sustainable development will thrive among communities with access to clean water and healthy environment.
Given the threats posed by climate change, environmental degradation, and inequalities on vulnerable communities of Africa, particularly those in rural areas, RUPAID remains dedicated to promoting and implementing innovative interventions for resilient communities and environmental sustainability.
We take this Africa Day opportunity to salute the great spirit of unity among Africans, their resilience, and the common vision for the future as an integrated continent where all communities’ flourishes. We urge governments, civil societies, development agencies, traditional leaders, and young people to work together towards achieving Agenda 2063 – a peaceful, inclusive, and sustainable Africa.
Happy Africa Day 2026.

Africa Day 2026: Promotion of Unity, Peace, and Sustainability in Northern Ghana

On the occasion of 63 years of unity, integration, and development in Africa, Northcode Ghana also marks Africa Day 2026 by joining hands to build peaceable, resilient and sustainable communities across Northern Ghana.
The theme adopted by the African Union in 2026 is entitled "Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063". This year's theme reflects the importance of sustaining the natural resources of the continent in order to achieve health, dignity, resilience and development. On the same note, the Africa Day Theme "63 Years of Unity, Integration and Development" emphasizes the significance of collective action and responsibilities in shaping the future of Africa.
In the light of the mentioned issues, it should be noted that the African Union themes fully represent the activities and values of Northcode Ghana. It focuses on improving the quality of life, environment, and livelihoods of the disadvantaged and marginalized population. As a priority target group, Northcode Ghana considers poor women, children, and indigenous communities in their interventions.
The core message in the work of Northcode is that sustainable development can occur only if there is peace, inclusiveness, environmental sustainability, and social cohesion.
Currently, the communities in the Savannah region and other areas in Northern Ghana experience various challenges such as climate change, environmental degradation, water resource problems, youth unemployment, social marginalization, and ethnic conflicts. All these issues can worsen situations and hinder peaceful co-existence if no actions are undertaken.
Throughout the years, Northcode Ghana was engaged in supporting the promotion of peacebuilding and social cohesion between ethnic communities. Thus, the organization provided an opportunity for various dialogues, youth leadership programs, mentorship programs, inter-communal relations, community engagement, and peacebuilding initiatives.
It is worth noting that peacebuilding activities conducted by Northcode were complemented by environmental sustainability interventions. For instance, competition for water resources and other natural resources can often lead to conflicts between communities. In this regard, the activities of the organization aimed at ensuring access to water resources.
Finally, Northcode Ghana places youth and their activities in the center of its operations. Young people from Northern Ghana still have great potential in contributing to peacebuilding and social cohesion. Youth-led peace-building activities and community engagement programs help to promote peace and sustainability.
Reflecting on the events of the past, one should recognize that Africa still needs many years to build strong communities characterized by inclusiveness, empowerment of women and youths, environmental sustainability, and equitable opportunities for development.
In accordance with this view, Northcode Ghana hopes that on this Africa Day, communities will be able to celebrate the achievements made during the previous 63 years and focus on the future of Africa.
Happy Africa Day 2026!
