Develop a Positive Mental Attitude (PMA) and let it be seen and felt by others. ..."One's personality is the sample case which shows what one has to offer." A pleasing personality can become your greatest ASSET because with it you can sell your way through life on your own terms. Your personality consists of the sum total of all those mental and physical traits which distinguish you from all others, for better or for worse. It is the most important factor in determining whether you are liked. It is the medium by which you negotiate your way through life. And it determines your ability to negotiate with others to get their cooperation.
(Charles M. Schwab's pleasing personality lifted him from day laborer to a high executive position at a salary of $75,000 a year, and he often received a bonus of $1,000,000. His employer, Andrew Carnegie, said the yearly salary was for the work Schwab performed, but the bonus was for what Schwab, with his PLEASING PERSONALITY, could get others to do.)
Cowardice asks the question, 'Is it safe?' Expediency asks the question, 'Is it politic?' Vanity asks the question, 'Is it popular?' But, conscience asks the question, 'Is it right?' And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but one must take it because one's conscience tells one that it is right." - Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-1968)
Past failures or even the fear of failing can keep us stuck in life. This is normal, but also EASY to overcome. Equip yourself with the skills to succeed and stop living your life in fear.
The most prominent quality of man is his innate desire for personal freedom and the privilege of exercising his personal initiative in any manner he chooses. Anything that restricts this desire sets some form of counter resistance on the part of those who are so restricted.
"Everybody thinks theyâre a leader". Most are far from it. The harsh reality is that we live in a world awash with wannabe leaders. As much as some donât want to admit it, not everyone can or should become a leader. Simply desiring to be a leader doesn't mean a person has the character, skill, and courage necessary to be a leader.
If you think youâre a leader, but havenât been recognized as such, you have a problem. Either youâre incorrect in your self-assessment, or those you report to donât recognize your talent. Hereâs the good news; handled correctly, either scenario can be resolved if youâre willing to do some work.
Iâm often asked what it takes to get to the top â itâs as if people want an add water and mix recipe for leadership. While there are many paths to leadership, theyâre certainly not all created equal. Perhaps a more telling issue in todayâs world is many of those desiring to get ahead, have no desire to help others get ahead.
I never cease to be amazed at the numbers of people in leadership positions that shouldn't be. Likewise, I've stopped being surprised when those charged with leadership development canât seem to figure out what constitutes a leader. Itâs my hope the following list will eliminate the confusion about why someone isn't a leader.
Youâre not a leader ifâŚ
1. You donât get results: Real leaders perform â they get the job done â they consistently exceed expectations. No results = no leadership â itâs just that simple.
2. You get results the wrong way: If the only way you can solve the deficit described in point #1 above is through chicanery or skullduggery youâre not a leader. The ends donât justify the means. If you abuse your influence, donât treat people well, or confuse manipulation with leadership, you may win a few battles, but youâll lose the war. Optics over ethics never ends well, and being a jerk doesnât make you a leader.
3. You donât care: Indifference is a characteristic not well suited to leadership. You simply cannot be a leader if you donât care about those you lead. The real test of any leader is whether or not those they lead are better off for being led by them.
4. Youâre chasing a position and not a higher purpose: If you value self-interest above service beyond self you simply donât understand the concept of leadership. Leadership is about caring about something beyond yourself, and leading others to a better place â even if it means you take a back seat, or end up with no seat at all. Power often comes with leadership, but itâs not what drives real leaders.
5. You care more about making promises than keeping them: Leadership isnât about your rhetoric; itâs about your actions. Leadership might begin with vision casting, but itâs delivering the vision that will ultimately determine your success as a leader.
6. You put people in boxes: Stop telling people why they canât do something and show them how they can. Leaders donât put people in boxes, itâs their obligation to free them from boxes. True leadership is about helping people reach places they didnât know they could go.
7. You follow the rules instead of breaking them: Status quo is the great enemy of leadership. Leadership is nothing if not understanding the need for change, and then possessing the ability to deliver it.
8. You churn talent instead of retain it: Real leadership serves as a talent magnet â not a talent repellent. If you canât acquire talent, canât develop talent, or canât retain talent you are not a leader.
9. You take credit instead of giving it: True leadership isnât found seeking the spotlight, but seeking to shine the spotlight on others. The best leaders only use âIâ when accepting responsibility for failures. Likewise, they are quick to use âweâ when referring to successes.
10. You care about process more than people: But for the people there is no platform. Without the people you have nothing to lead. When you place things above the people you lead you have failed as a leader.
It keeps your âself-promotionâ skills sharp. With practice, we learn how to âsellâ ourselves in a concise way that captures the attention of new acquaintances, and eventually a future employer!
Look pass the past of a person and give them reputation for their future. In the movie; "Man of La Mancha, a man rescues a common pr******te named Aldonza, whom he sees as a beautiful lady. He calls her Dulcinea, and makes her an object of his nightly exploits. At first she resents him; she thinks he is mocking her because she hates herself and her life. But with time, his VISION of her replaces her own and gives her HOPE. And as the old man lies in his death bed she thanks him for seeing in her what she could not see in herself.
In the book of Genesis, God changes the life of Abram; an old man with no offspring. When God renames him Abraham, which means 'Father of Many'. Abraham did indeed become a father in his old age.
God takes Jacob; 'a trickster who cheats his brother, lies to his father and constantly schemes to get ahead, and God renames him 'Israel'. His future becoming the inception of a nation, Israel. Give people a nickname or a new name that speaks to their potential. Everyone enjoys that encouragement that comes from someone seeing and speaking to their potential. Forget about a person's failure in the past and focus on their potential in the future. Ask; what is special, wonderful and unique about this person! How can I show it to others! Do it! Backup your high opinion of a person with action that reinforces that opinion. Many people go farther they thought they could go because someone else believed that they could, and told them so.
