IITA BBEST Project
IITABBEST, an innovation that turns waste into economically valuable animal feed and organic fertilizer using the Black Soldier Fly.
Known for its economic and environmental benefits, the Black Soldier Fly is an insect which during its larval stage voraciously feed on organic waste to produce: dried larvae used in animal feed production and frass used in vegetable production.
Have you watched the IITA BBEST Project on Channel one TV?
you are invited to watch the interview here on Facebook and on all our social media platform IITA BBEST Project.
During this one on one on Breakfast Daily, Dr Agbodzavu, the IITA BBEST Project manager said the BSF larvae is an alternative protein for animal feeding.
Dr Saethre explained that the frass is a potent organic fertilizer for vegetable production.
Dr Ofori added that the frass enriches the soil and gives it additional nutrient and improves the moisture content of the soil.
The production of the BSF larvae and frass represent an employment opportunity for farmers.

The BSF Frass, a good choice for vegetables🥒🫑 and crop farmers.
The vegetables planted on the BBEST project's field established at Kofisah, Nsawam and fertilized with the BSF Frass has shown the potential of the Frass, to grow vegetables alike poultry manure and NPK.
At the end of the first harvest, farmers witness the ability that the of the Black Soldier Fly Frass (BSFF) to increase yield and improve soil fertility.
Check in the pictures below lettuce and cucumber produced with BSF Frass.
The second round of demonstration is ongoing. Stay tuned for more information on the BSF Frass.

Excerpts from the 2nd .
Few weeks earlier the IITA BBEST Project, BNARI-GAEC and WorldVeg - WCA engaged farmers in a field demonstration activity to showcase the potential of the use of the BSF frass in crops and 🥕 🍅 vegetables production.
Another field demonstration brought together farmers, key stakeholders, input dealers, a crop protectionist representative from agricultural NGOs and farmer-based organizations.
Participants engaged in the following activities:
✨ observed and assessed the performance of the different fertilizers on tomatoes, and cucumber.
✨ tracked the development of the crops in vegetative stage following the fertilizer application.
✨ staking of tomato plant to protect the fruits.
✨ They also prepared the nursery bed for the transplanting lettuce in the coming weeks.
Dr Mawufe Agbodzavu and Dr May-Guri Saethre, leads of IITA BBEST Project engaged farmers and expressed the project commitment to supporting them with agricultural innovations.

Empowering farmers towards a sustainable agriculture future. ⭐
from the community successfully participated in a field demonstration activity led by the IITA BBEST Project in partnership with the World Vegetable Center and BNARI-GAEC.
During the session, farmers were sensitized on the technology and how it is transforming the agriculture landscape.
They visited the BSF production facility and witnessed the production of the BSF larvae, used in 🐖 🐟 animal production and the frass used in 🍅 🧅 🌶️ vegetable production.
They were sensitized on the application and the effects of the BSF frass on vegetables and collectively applied it and other fertilizers on the field.
Farmers will be involved in the next stages of the field demonstration namely the vegetative and the maturity stages to witness the performance of the BSF frass on the selected vegetables: tomatoes, okra and Amaranth.
We appreciate the presence of the District Director of Agriculture at the district office in Nsawam, Esther Comey, and two Agricultural Extension Agents who grace the session.

Promoting sustainable agriculture practices and improving livelihoods. ⭐
Congratulations to the Ghana Prisons Service, whose selected officers completed a three-day training on the BSF technology.
Last week, IITA BBEST Project in partnership with Biotechnology and Nuclear Agriculture Research Institute - GAEC built the capacity of selected officers from the Ghana Prisons Service on the production of the BSF larvae and frass at the BSF Production Unit at Kofisah in Nsawam.
During the three-day hands-on training, the prisons officers were introduced to:
✨ the design and setup of BSF traps for field application. This is essential step in sourcing wild BSF for colony establishment.
The training featured key practical areas such as:
✨ egg incubation,
✨ egg transfer preparation.
✨ Larvae processing among others.
The IITA BBEST Project will continue to promote a sustainable agriculture practice by supporting communities and agripreneurs and interest groups.
