If a building weighs 10,000 tons, the soil beneath it must be able to push back with exactlv 10,000 tons of resistance. If it can't, the building sinks.
M The Concept: Soil Bearing Capacity (SBC) is the maximum pressure the ground can withstand before it physically rips apart (shear failure) or compresses too much (settlement). XX The Failure: If the foundation is too small, the downward pressure acts like a needle. It exceeds the Ultimate Bearina Capacity, punching straight into the earth while the soil around it bulges upward.
v The Solution: The "Snowshoe Effect.' Engineers calculate the Safe Bearing Capacity by taking the ultimate limit and dividing it by a Factor of Safety (usuallv 2.5 to 3). If the soil is weak (like soft clay), engineers design massive, wide concrete footings to spread the load out over a huge surface area, reducing the pressure to safe levels.

1. The Dead Load: This is the permanent, immovable weight of the building itself. Every concrete slab, steel beam, glass window, and brick wall. It never moves, and it never changes. If a beam fails under a Dead Load, the building collapses before anyone even moves in.
* 2. The Live Load: This is the chaos of human life. It includes people, furniture, equipment, and vehicles. Live loads are temporary and constantly moving.
A The Danger Zone: Live loads can become dynamic. If 100 people are standing in a room, the floor holds them easily. But if those same 100 people start jumping up and down in unison (like at a concert), the kinetic energy multiplies the Live Load, creating massive spikes in structural stress!
