Did you know that some medications can make it harder for your body to cope with hot weather? β˜€οΈ

Here are some tips to help with the heat when on medication:

πŸ’§ Drink fluids regularly, even if you don't feel thirsty
πŸ‰ Eat foods with a high water content, such as watermelon, cucumber, and other fruits
🏠 Keep cool by closing curtains or blinds and using fans safely
πŸ‘• Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing
🌳 Stay in the shade and avoid the hottest part of the day (11am to 3pm)
πŸ’Š Store medication correctly in a cool, dry place and check the instructions on the packaging
⚠️ Look out for signs of heat-related illness, including headaches, dizziness, nausea, muscle cramps, unusual tiredness, and confusion
πŸ‘©β€βš•οΈ If you have concerns about how hot weather may affect your medication, speak to your GP or pharmacist
❌ Never stop taking prescribed medication without medical advice

A little preparation can make a big difference during hot weather.

Stay cool, stay hydrated, and look out for those around you. ❀️

Learning Disabilities and Hot Weather β˜€οΈ

As heatwaves become more common across the UK, it's important to remember that people with learning disabilities may face additional challenges during periods of extreme heat.

There are simple ways you can help:
πŸ’§ Encourage regular drinks throughout the day
πŸ‰ Offer foods with a high water content, such as watermelon and cucumber
🧒 Provide lightweight clothing, hats and sunscreen when outdoors
🌳 Stay in the shade and avoid the hottest part of the day
🏠 Keep indoor spaces cool by closing curtains and blinds
⚠️ Watch for signs of heat exhaustion including headaches, dizziness, excessive sweating, nausea and unusual tiredness

By raising awareness of the risks and sharing practical advice, we can help people with learning disabilities stay safe, comfortable and well throughout the summer.

This week, we've proudly celebrated Learning Disability Week and its powerful theme, "Do You See Me?"

Awareness helps break down barriers, challenge assumptions, and create communities where everyone can thrive.

While Learning Disability Week shines a spotlight on these important conversations, our commitment doesn't end when the week does.

Let's continue to ask ourselves: Do we really see people for who they are, their talents, their voices and their potential?

Together, we can make inclusion an everyday reality, not just an annual campaign.

Learning Disability Week – Do You See Me? πŸ‘€

Support our artists this Learning Disability Week.🧑

Many of our artists with learning disabilities rarely have the opportunity to share their creativity with a wider audience. Through Happy Mail, they can express themselves, feel a sense of purpose, and experience the joy of knowing that their artwork is seen, valued and appreciated. 🎨

By supporting our artists, you're recognising the talents and voices of people with learning disabilities and celebrating their creativity that deserves to be seen.

This Learning Disability Week, help us answer the question: β€œDo You See Me?” with a β€œYes.” 🧑 Support our artists at https://guideposts.org.uk/happy-mail/

As we celebrate Learning Disability Week 2026, the theme β€œDo You See Me?β€œ invites us to pause and reflect on an important question.

When you meet someone with a learning disability, what do you see? Do you see a label? A diagnosis? A stereotype? Or do you see the whole person?

At Guideposts, we see people with talents, ambitions, friendships, passions, and dreams. We see artists, singers, sports enthusiasts, technology experts, adventurers, best friends, and community leaders. We see people whose unique personalities and contributions brighten the world around them every day.
