A big thank you to porter Leeroy from our Hemel Hempstead store who went out of his way to help a disabled customer when her car broke down in the car park.

Leeroy was collecting trolleys and baskets when he saw the lady trying to jump start her car and noticed that the battery charger was starting to smoke. He quickly went over to disconnect the charger and make sure all was safe. He then got his car and tried to jump start the car but to no avail. As the lady didn't have her phone with her, Leeroy lent her his so she could contact the breakdown service but she struggled to get through. As Leeroy’s shift had finished he put the lady’s shopping in his car and dropped her off home.

The following day was Leeroy’s day off but he still collected the lady in the morning and took her back to the store where she met someone from the breakdown service who sorted out her car. Leeroy has been nominated for an Asda service superstar award by service section leader Gemma, who said: "This was a selfless act of kindness by Leeroy who went above and beyond for a customer."

A very happy 100th birthday to Tipton Twin Lil who’s been a regular and much-loved customer at our Great Bridge store for years.

Community champion Parv from the store was invited to Lil’s special birthday party and took a bouquet of flowers, chocolates and a card from everyone at the store. Parv said: “Her face lit up when she saw me arrive. She is such a lovely, lovely lady and she looks great for her age – she doesn't look 100! It was such a pleasure to attend and I'm delighted that I was invited."

Lil and her sister Doris hit the headlines back in 2019 when, at the age 95, they became Britain's oldest identical twins. Sadly, Doris passed away three years ago, with the funeral procession pausing at our Great Bridge store. Lil talks about her adventures on the page Lil & Doris

Home shopping driver Derek from our Great Bridge store was on one of his first calls after recovering from a heart attack when he saved the life of a regular customer.

Derek didn't get a response when he rang the bell and knocked on the door of the elderly lady's home in the Bartley Green area of Birmingham so when he looked through the front window and saw her lying on the living room floor he immediately called 999. He later discovered she'd been there for two days.

The lady's since made a good recovery and rang the store to thank Derek for his actions. He said: "A few weeks later I was delivering to that vicinity so I thought I'd knock on her door to see if she was back at home. She opened the door straight away which was nice to see. She said to me 'I don't think I'd be here if you hadn't have noticed'. So it was a good outcome. She's a lovely old lady and we always have a chat when I call round."

"It's not very often that such kindness is found these days" – that's what a customer at our Raunds supermarket had to say about our brilliant colleague James in a letter thanking him for helping her do her shopping.

The lady had told James she was struggling with arthritis, and her husband who would normally help was in hospital, so James took her around the store, picked out her groceries, scanned and packed the shopping and loaded it into a taxi that had come to take her home. The customer was so touched that she wrote to the store to say thank you.

James said: "I could sympathise with her as my family has got a history of arthritis and I've got it myself in a lot of my joints. I tried to make her shopping experience as pleasant as possible. She wasn't one of our regular customers so I hope we gave a good impression."

When Maxine from our Kingswood store spotted an upset customer she went straight over to see what was wrong – and when the lady told her she'd lost her purse containing her wages and precious family mementos Maxine was determined to help her find it.

She got the lady a chair and calmed her down, before retracing her steps and finding the lady's purse, complete with all her money and photos of her parents. Store manager Terry said: "The customer was so overwhelmed that she returned to the store to give Maxine a beautiful bouquet of flowers for her exceptional service and gratitude. We are all extremely proud of Maxine. She is a true superstar; keep up the amazing service."

Everyone in our Cramlington store is right behind England ahead of the big match .... well, apart from their Spanish colleague Roberto!

Roberto, who's worked at the store for 15 years, is flying the flag for Spain but says he won't mind too much if England win as it'll please his Newcastle-born wife Michelle. He said: "I think it will be a very close game, with not much in it. It will be fun. I'm glad both teams have got to the final as although I'm Spanish my home now is in England and I support Newcastle United as well as Athletic Bilbao."

He's been getting into the spirit of things with his colleague Ellen, pictured here showing her support for England, who's confident the trophy will finally be "coming home". She said: "I think we will win, definitely. I have a gut feeling. We've got to be positive, haven't we? It''s about time. Spain are a good side, but we can play well when we want to. We should be proud. I just hope we win mind as Roberto will not shut up afterwards if Spain win! He's a canny lad though and we do have a lot of banter."

To mark National Thank You Day we're celebrating all our amazing colleagues and customers who spend much of their free time volunteering in the communities around our stores.

Among our colleagues we want to say a special thank you to are Gary from our Ferring store (right) who’s chairman of the Friends of Shoreham Fort and helped preserve the Victorian fort; Helen from our Peterlee store (top left) who devotes hours each week to the 3rd Peterlee Scouts and Cubs; and Ernie from our Wheatley store (bottom left) who volunteers with a range of groups and good causes, including Wheatley Windmill.

Gary said: "I have done my best to really make a difference in our local area, concentrating on the smaller, grassroots charities like my own, that have all seen a massive detrimental effect caused by Covid and the cost-of-living crisis that we are now in."

Ernie said: “I’m approaching 60 years old now and I see the volunteering activities as being important to my personal wellbeing and general health and fitness – after all, people are a social species – and the things I volunteer for are all in my immediate neighbourhood."

A big thank you to Gary, Helen and Ernie and all our local legends who do so much to make our communities wonderful places to live.

Well done to Jenny from our Stafford store who went out of her way to help a 90-year-old housebound customer who was struggling with her online food order.

The lady, who'd recently had a stroke, telephoned the store in some distress but Jenny soon put her at ease.

Jenny then drove to the customer's home a few miles away to help her get her order sorted which she did in no time.

Service section leader Jenny, who's worked at the store for 26 years, said: "She does her shopping online each week as she's in a wheelchair and can't get out. She'd managed to lock herself out of the account and was getting very upset. She was very grateful of my help. She was a lovely lady."

Jenny has now been nominated for and Asda service superstar award by Kam, who said: "It was amazing service by Jenny. The Asda Foundation is awarding grants worth £1 million this year to help communities across the UK have a safe space for people to be together.

One group who have recently benefitted from an Asda Foundation Investing In Spaces and Places grant is Trafford Veterans, who've picked up the keys to a new van thanks to a grant of £24,696. The van has access to the internet, an awning if someone can’t access the van, solar panels and even a defibrillator and much more. It is amazing and will help the group grow even more."

Claire, co-founder of Trafford Veterans CIC, said: "Catharine is an amazing person who helps a lot of local groups through her role as community champion. We had an idea to build a veterans' hub and thanks to her support we were able to make this a reality through the Asda Foundation. Thank you so much for your help. This project will make a huge difference to the people in our group."

A huge well done to Antony from our Chorley store for saving the life of a three-year-old boy who was choking on a sweet while out shopping with his family.

Antony knew exactly what to do when the boy's panicked mum came running to the customer service desk for help – tilting the boy so he was facing down and giving him several thrusts on his back with the palm of his hand until the sweet flew out.

Antony, who's a trained first aider, said: "His mum was just sat on the floor hysterical, which is understandable, so I gave the little boy back to her as he was scared. It was all over in about 45 seconds! Any longer and it could have been fatal, but luckily it wasn't so I guess I did save his life. I just think we were both at the right place at the right time. I'd do it again, if need be, in an instant."

Store manager Andrew says all the team are so proud of Antony: "Quick-thinking Antony was quite literally a life saver. His calm and quick thinking made a real difference that day."

Customers and colleagues had the chance to meet World Cup hero Sir Geoff Hurst in our Eastlands store ahead of England's match with Denmark.

The 82-year-old, who scored a hat-trick in the 1966 final, stopped for a chat, posed for pictures, signed autographs ... and even had a go on one of the checkouts. With the summer of sport now upon us, many of our delivery drivers are wearing 'Happy to Chat about the Game’ badges to let customers know they are happy to kick off a conversation about it while delivering their groceries.

The initiative first launched as a trial in November 2000 in conjunction with the Royal Voluntary Service after it was recognised that our drivers formed a lifeline for some people throughout the pandemic. We've re-launched the scheme for the summer of sport and hope to unite all ages.

Delivery driver Andrew from our Morley home shopping centre said: "I know from experience that even just having a few minutes chat with someone whilst you’re delivering their shopping can have a such a positive impact on their day.”

Our chief customer officer David Hills said: “This summer, we want to ensure we are keeping the conversations going with our older customers, especially as one of our drivers maybe the only person they interact with that day. This badge is a symbol of our colleagues' continued friendly and approachable service which can make such a difference to those that don’t have much contact with others."

Much-loved porter Pete is retiring after years of distinguished service at our Newark store – and handing over the trolley straps to his 17-year-old grandson Matthew who recently started at the store.

While Pete, who's 68, looks forward to a well-earned rest Matthew will be picking up the mantle and taking on his role as porter. Pete said: "I've been training Matthew up and showing him the ropes and he's taken to it like a duck to water. It's his first ever job and he's loving it. He's following in my footsteps and taking notice of everything. He's a good lad and gets on with the customers many of whom know he's my grandson. I've loved working here, every minute of it. It's been brilliant. It's one of those jobs where you want to come to work. It's the people, simple as that."

Matthew said: “I got the opportunity to learn from his years of knowledge and experience and it's been great having that extra time to spend with my grandad. Every day brings new challenges and I enjoy interacting with the public. Asda has made me feel really welcome and supported. I'm glad that I was given the opportunity to follow in the legend’s footsteps!”

Happy Father's Day to dads everywhere – like Brian, Colin and Peter who all work alongside their children at our Blantyre store.

Senior director Brian has worked for Asda for 18 years, while his 19-year-old son Daniel has been an ambient colleague for two years. Brian said: "I see Daniel often when we’re working in store – fortunately I never have to boss him around, but he does ask me how to best serve our customers, which is great to see."

Section leader Peter has worked in the store for just under two years, while his 18-year-old son, also named Peter, works on grocery. Dad Peter said: “Unfortunately, Peter and I don’t cross paths much in work as we often work different days, but my wife, Lee, works in our general merchandising department as well so she’s the one bossing us around!”

Home shopping colleague Suzie, who's 19, has worked with her delivery driver dad Colin for the past eight months. Suzie started working at the store after finishing school, and the father-daughter duo share friendly banter in work. They are planning to spend some quality time together on Father’s Day.

Ryan Rooney, community champion at our Maryhill store, has created the first Scottish Nanzone event ahead of the Scotland vs Germany game. He said: "It’s been great fun bringing the community together to chat about all things sport, we have so many passionate fans of all ages here getting behind the Scotland team, it's great to bring them all together and have a bit of debate on how we’re going to do in the tournament."

The first Nanzones in England will open at our stores in Watford, Manchester Eastlands and Liverpool Arrowe Park on June 20 for the England vs Denmark game.

David Hills, Chief Customer Officer at Asda, said: "Sport has a way of bringing people together like nothing else. That’s why we want to use the power of football fandom to help strengthen community spirit this summer."
