Need something to take your mind off the Budget for a moment?

This week, QuickBooks confidently decided that one of our sole trader clients was paying himself wages, which isn’t even a thing for sole traders.

That tiny miscategorisation would’ve meant he wasn’t putting aside enough tax for the year…

AI is fast and can be really helpful.
But AI also guesses, and those guesses can cost you.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with using automation or AI (we love them).
We use smart tools every single day to streamline the boring bits of bookkeeping…
but we still step in, check everything over, and correct what AI gets wrong to make sure it’s accurate and HMRC-friendly.

If you’re using QuickBooks, Xero or any accounting software, just make sure you’re double-checking those automated categories, before they snowball into a HMRC nightmare!

The Real Cost of Minimum Wage Increases for Employers
For full-time staff (37.5h/week), once you add 3% pension and Employer’s NI (assuming Employer’s Allowance is used), the annual extra cost is:

Over 21s
- Wage: £975
- Pension: £29.25
- NI: £146.25
Total: £1,150.50

18–20s
- Wage: £1,657.50
- Pension: £49.73
- NI: £248.63
Total: £1,955.85

Minimum wage rises mean more than just higher pay, they bring significant extra costs for employers. Employers should plan ahead for payroll, pensions, and NI when budgeting.
