🎾Tennis Elbow - What is it?

Tennis elbow, otherwise known as lateral epicondylitis, is a condition where the tendons on the outside of the elbow become irritated , sore and sometimes inflamed due to overuse or repetitive activity, such as playing tennis, computer work, resistance training and other activities that require a gripping motion with repeated flexion and extension at the elbow.

⚠️ Signs and symptoms include:

* Pain or burning at the lateral (outer) side of the elbow joint
* Weak grip
* Radiating pain down forearm
* Pain when extending the elbow

🧑‍💼Management:

* Modify activities
Due to tennis elbow being an overuse injury, the main way to help is to reduce the aggravating activity, as this may provide time for the tendon to heal.

* Ice and heat 🧊
The use of combination therapy helps reduce pain, while also relaxing the muscles. Cold therapy temporarily restricts blood flow to the area, and numbs pain receptors, while heat promotes blood flow and reduces muscle tension.

* Strengthening exercises 💪
Isometric exercises encourage blood flow to the tendon, without overloading the muscle.

🤲 Clinical Therapy:

Here’s just a few modalities that can be used to treat this condition -

* Sports Massage
Sports massage therapy helps to reduce pain by reducing tension in the forearm extensor muscles and promoting blood flow to speed up the healing process.

* Laser Therapy
Laser therapy uses specific light wavelengths in order to pe*****te the injured tendons. This light energy stimulates cellular repair by promoting local blood flow and reducing inflammation.

* Kinesiology Taping
Kinesiology taping can reduce the tension in the muscle tendon by lifting the tissue. It also improves proprioception within the tissue.

* Tecar therapy
Tecar therapy uses radiofrequency to increase blood flow and reduce pain, muscle tension and inflammation of the tissue.

These are just some of the modalities commonly used at our Injury Clinic to treat this condition, wider modalities such as Dry Needling can also help💪.

⚡️ Love these photos from behind the scenes on last week’s Electrotherapy Extension day course 👌.

Although we go through the theory of:
Shockwave,
Tecar,
Laser
and PEMF therapy,
the best part is often playing with the machines and experiencing what they can do and how they could help to extend your clinical work.

📆 Our next course runs this November at our training centre in Swindon ⚡️⚡️ - https://coreelements.uk.com/electrotherapy-extension-course/ (link in bio).
