“something we see quite often in young patients with pectus deformity - typically in early teens who are growing a lot …is stretch marks – usually on the lower back but can be other places such as shoulders or even on the chest. What are they?”
Stretch marks, medically known as striae, are a type of skin condition characterized by visible lines or streaks on the skin's surface. They commonly appear as parallel bands or stripes and have a different color or texture compared to the surrounding skin.
During adolescence, when teenagers go through growth spurts, hormonal changes, and rapid physical development, stretch marks may occur. These changes can cause the skin to stretch and expand more quickly than the body's collagen production can keep up with, leading to the formation of stretch marks.
Stretch marks typically appear in areas where the skin is subject to significant stretching, such as the back, abdomen, hips, thighs, breasts, and buttocks. In young teenager boys they appear to most commonly on lower back and occasionally the shoulders. They can vary in colour, ranging from pink, red, purple, or brown, depending on the individual's skin tone. Over time, they typically fade to a lighter shade or become less noticeable.

Google review of Pectus Clinic by Ethnea Vaughan ★★★★★ "My son and I cannot rate Mr Hunt highly enough. He is kind and personable and he explained the process of the brace with a clear timetable and what to expect. Rib flare bracing can be effective in treating rib flare caused by pectus deformity. The brace works by applying constant pressure on the chest to gradually correct the rib flare over time.
However, the effectiveness of rib flare bracing can depend on the severity as well as the patient's age, compliance with wearing the brace, and other individual factors.
It's important to consult an experienced healthcare professional to determine if rib flare bracing is a suitable treatment option for you or your loved one's condition. We can provide guidance on the best course of treatment based on individual circumstances.

Have you ever noticed that some people have a rib cage that flares outwards, making their chest appear wider than usual? This is known as RIB FLARE, and it can be a symptom of a condition called pectus deformity.
If you or someone you know has rib flare or a pectus deformity, it's important to consult a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan. Treatment options may include observation, bracing, physical therapy, or surgery, depending on the severity of the condition and its impact on daily life.
It's also important to note that not all cases of rib flare are caused by pectus deformities. Rib flare can also be caused by poor posture, scoliosis, or other skeletal abnormalities. If you have concerns about your rib cage or chest shape, speak with your doctor for a thorough evaluation.
