Matching main clauses with subordinate clauses to make complex sentences in this session today.

Did you know that a subordinate clause doesn’t make sense on its own? Lots of giggles when we challenged ourselves to have a conversation using only subordinate clauses! Using fun and games to help this dyslexic learner understand grammar rules.

Some students find writing stories tricky and this isn’t always through lack of ideas or creativity - they can get bogged down in the small details rather than advancing the action. A good example of this is getting lost in a dialogue between characters. This evening I worked with this dyslexic Year 5 pupil who is an incredible storyteller but struggles to complete his written work in the time allocated in class. I showed him how he can advance his story through using his characters thoughts and feelings rather than getting stuck in a long dialogue. Some really fantastic work from this articulate and wonderfully imaginative young man :)

Super work this evening with this Year 6 pupil who is dyslexic and struggles with remembering grammatical terms and uses. We looked at pronouns creating cards to help with categorising and spelling. As always, he loves a bit of healthy competition so we made a game of sorting them against the clock.

Love these Fraction Action Snap cards which I picked up in Aldi about 4 years ago! Still use them regularly as a fun way to recognise and match fractions. We play snap, matching pairs, hunt the fraction - a bit of friendly competition is a fantastic learning tool and teaches resilience too 😁

Some work I have been doing with a dyslexic Year 6 pupil around themes and imagery in poetry. He is a student who really needs to talk around a text in order to fully comprehend it and poetry is a particular struggle for him. We wrote our own poem using Pie Corbett’s 3 Word Poem idea and then discussed what it could mean to us and how poetry can mean different things to different people. We then looked at a poem and discussed what it could mean and what some of the imagery was trying to tell us. I was thrilled when he then came up with 4 themes from the poem independently. Great work from a really hard-working pupil 😁

An intense game of Fraction War with my pupil in this session! We use playing cards to help us randomly create fractions, the pupil must then find equivalents and compare.

Could you use a subordinating conjunction in a sentence? So much easier when it’s the difference between winning and losing at noughts and crosses!

DICE - one of my favourite resources to explore maths with my students. Today we used them to find equivalent fractions through fun, games, healthy competition and the feeling of success!

SYMBOLS ARE FOR EVERYONE!

I find using symbols in my sessions helps, not only my neurodivergent students, but all children who struggle to articulate when they need help or a break. By keeping talk to a minimum we avoid overloading our brains and can stick to the task in hand. Symbols rock! 🥰
