The Minerva Hotel, which stood on the corner of High Street West and East Cross Street.
Within 140 yards there were 7 other licensed premises, due to lack of customers it lost it's licence in 1941 and closed shortly afterwards.

Look how much better this looks in Ashbrooke!
Graffiti tells people “this area is rundown. This area is forgotten”.
Zero tolerance and quick clean up should be the only way forward in Sunderland.

June is Men's Mental Health Awareness Month - last Friday was also the two year anniversary of me starting my first therapy session.
Those of you who have followed my page for several years will know I have been open about my mental health struggles in 2024.
Life these days is hard for everyone and we shouldn't be afraid to talk about it or to seek help when we need it.

Yesterdays, I gave an interview to a journalist about how politics is changing in Sunderland.
I said something to him that shocked him: I like that we are now in a multi-party system in Sunderland.
Yes, it has made things harder for political parties but it also means that every single vote matters now in a way that it has never done before.
Every single vote must be fought over across the entire city.
There was a time not so long ago where Labour had majorities of over 1000 votes in some parts of Sunderland with no challengers. This meant that the voices of people in places like Silksworth or Hylton Caste were often taken for granted.
Now? Well Reform may have won a lot of wards this time round but they didn’t get many majorities (if any) that were close to that big - this means that they need to work harder to keep their seats compared to when Labour was in power.
Every area now matters. Every ward is a marginal. Every voter in every ward now matters.

Ashbrooke Conservatives Support Backhouse Park Family Fun Day — Sunderland Conservatives The local Conservative councillors for St Michael's Ward have always supported the Backhouse Park Family Fun Day - will that continue with the new administration?
I’ve been made aware that there have been car break-ins during the night around Grangetown/Hill View again recently.
Official police guidance: Please make sure to have no personal belongings on display or visible in your car.

After yesterday’s Backhouse Park Fun Day I thought it would be fun to do a little throwback post for a few photos showing the event over the last 6 years.
From the glorious sunny day in 2024 with Cllr Adele Graham-King to the rainy days of 2021 with Cllr Peter Wood.

SEA VIEW ROAD
The following issues were part of my work as a ward Councillor prior to the recent elections. I thought they may be of interest so any anticipated progress could be monitored.
1/. Sea View Road to be designated as having a 20mph speed limit, with roads humps to be installed subject to Council consultation with residents living close by. I had circulated this information with a personal letter.
2/. The small section of highway from The Sycamores to Ryhope Road, is to be resurfaced as part of the 2026/27 schedule. This follows-on from recent work further up Sea View Road that also saw more road resurfacing take place.
3/. I requested that a larger litter bin was installed on Sea View Road to replace the current small one which is, in my opinion, inadequate. I had not received a response from the Council before the May elections.
