UK business owners and directors could soon face more personal liability when cyber security goes wrong.
That’s a big shift: cyber risk is no longer just an “IT problem”: it’s governance, accountability, and evidence.
If you’re leading a business in Solihull, Coventry, Birmingham or anywhere in the West Midlands, ask yourself:
• Can we show we’ve taken “reasonable steps” to protect the business?
• Do we have the right controls, monitoring, backups and incident process in place?
• Could we prove it quickly if a customer, insurer or regulator asked tomorrow?
At Discus Systems PLC, our Cyber Security 7 package is built to help leaders put the right protections (and oversight) around cyber risk: without disrupting the business.

When a law firm or accountancy practice experiences unexpected IT downtime, the immediate frustration is obvious. But the true cost extends far beyond halted billable hours.
In professional services, operational momentum is everything. When systems fail or security gaps lead to reactive firefighting, the hidden costs start piling up: delayed billing cycles, frustrated clients waiting on urgent property completions or tax submissions, and the administrative burden of emergency remediation.
Reactive IT support often treats the symptoms rather than the root cause, leading to recurring issues and prolonged uncertainty. Shifting from a reactive scramble to a proactive security model ensures that vulnerabilities are neutralised before they disrupt day-to-day operations. For firms across Birmingham and the West Midlands, ensuring seamless, secure technology protects not just data, but your firm's hard-earned reputation.

Zero-day exploits, multi-factor authentication protocols, endpoints, firewalls... When protecting your business starts sounding like a foreign language, it is easy to switch off. At Discus Systems, we believe effective digital security shouldn't require a computer science degree to understand. SME owners across Birmingham and the West Midlands have enough on their plates without wading through layers of confusing tech-talk. Real protection is about plain-English answers to simple questions: Are our client files secure? Can our team work safely from home? If something goes wrong, how fast can we bounce back? For over 25 years, we have helped local businesses cut through the jargon and put reliable, all-you-can-eat protection in place with zero disruption to your daily operations. The Cyber Security & Resilience Bill represents a significant shift for Solihull and Birmingham business leaders. It moves digital security from an "IT issue" directly into the boardroom, introducing clearer lines of accountability for Managing Directors and Partners.
The message from Westminster is clear: digital resilience is now a matter of corporate governance. For SMEs across the West Midlands, the cost of inaction is no longer just a technical recovery fee or a temporary outage. It now carries the weight of potential personal liability for directors who fail to oversee adequate protections.
When oversight is lacking, the risks to your firm’s reputation and financial stability become a board-level responsibility. Understanding your obligations under this new legislation is the first step in protecting your legacy and your team. Ensuring you have the right frameworks in place is no longer optional: it is a requirement of modern leadership.
At Discus Systems, we guide professional services firms through these regulatory shifts, ensuring your oversight matches the current threat landscape without disrupting your daily operations. We believe in providing the technical value and guidance needed to navigate these changes with confidence.

43% of UK businesses identified a cyber breach or attack in the last year. For SMEs across Birmingham and Solihull, this statistic represents more than just a number: it highlights a significant risk gap.
According to the latest DSIT survey, many businesses remain in a 'somewhat prepared' state. They have some protection in place, but not enough to stop a determined threat. The divide between the 'safe half' and those at risk often comes down to the basics, such as Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA).
MFA is one of the most effective tools available for preventing unauthorised access, yet implementation remains inconsistent. Moving into the safe half isn't about complex IT overhauls; it's about building a foundation of resilience that protects your staff, your data, and your reputation.
At Discus Systems, we guide local professional services: from law firms to accountants: through these essentials. Our Cyber Security 7 solution is designed to provide that 'all-you-can-eat' protection, ensuring your business stays operational and secure without the stress of managing it yourself.
Is your SME currently in the safe half, or is there a gap in your defences?

Reflecting on a busy morning at the National Motorcycle Museum for our Solihull Cyber Advice Network event last week. It was great to see so many local business leaders gathered to discuss the reality of modern digital risks.
The highlights for many were our "Red Envelopes." Inside, attendees found a personalised Dark Web Report and a Domain Security Score. These weren't generic flyers, but hard facts showing exactly where their credentials might be exposed or where their email protection has gaps.
Most businesses don't realise where their vulnerabilities are until something goes wrong: and by then, the disruption is already done. Our goal was to show what actually needs fixing and how Cyber Essentials is changing the landscape for SMEs in the West Midlands.
If you couldn't join us, you can still get a clear view of where your business stands. Think of it as a mini fitness test for your domain: we check the essentials and give you a straightforward score.

Reflecting on an eye-opening week at the National Motorcycle Museum for the Solihull Cyber Advice Network event.
Yesterday we hosted a room full of local businesses to talk about the reality of cyber risk. Some arrived curious, but most left with a real sense of why security can't be an afterthought. Hackers only need one weak spot.
During the session, we handed out "red envelopes" containing a Dark Web Report showing exposed credentials and a Domain Security Score highlighting gaps in email protection. No guesswork. No "we think we're fine." Just facts.
Many businesses don't realise where their risks are until something goes wrong: and by then, it’s expensive. With Cyber Essentials 2026 here, things like mandatory MFA and the 14-day patching rule are the new standard.
If you missed the event, you can still get a clear view of where you stand. Think of it as a mini fitness test for your domain: we check the essentials and give you a straightforward score.

Why One 'Quick' Cyber Oversight Could Cost You £15,000+ This Quarter.
Many business leaders view IT security as a 'later' problem. But the real cost isn't just the solution: it’s the risk of inaction. When a single security gap is overlooked, the potential financial drain can scale quickly:
- Helpdesk Firefighting: Hours of senior time spent reacting to issues instead of driving growth.
- Employee Downtime: If your team can’t access files, productivity stops instantly.
- Recovery Costs: Emergency data restoration is expensive and rarely 100% successful.
- Reputation Damage: Client trust takes years to build and seconds to lose.
Most businesses rely on patchy, disconnected software. What you actually need is a comprehensive, managed shield.
Our Cyber Security 7 solution provides unlimited security, proactive monitoring, and staff training to ensure your team isn't the weakest link. We ensure zero business disruption during implementation so you can stay focused on what matters.
Don't wait for a breach to realize the value of protection.
