ASSIST is a Sheffield based charity supporting destitute people seeking asylum in our city. People refused asylum in the UK are not allowed to work, to register themselves as homeless or to be placed in local authority night shelters. Many become destitute, struggling daily for food, accommodation and clothing. We support up to 60 people each week with small welfare payments, subsidised bus passes

Happy Pride Month π³οΈβπ
On Saturday, we had a fantastic time at . A huge thank you to Kelham Pride, Kelham Island and Neepsend Community Alliance, and everyone involved, especially the volunteers whose hard work made the event possible. Weβre also grateful to our own ASSIST volunteers and trustees, whose time and enthusiasm helped make our stall such a welcoming space throughout the day. π«
To everyone who stopped by to say hello, thank you. Your solidarity with people seeking sanctuary was heartening, and it was wonderful to meet so many people and be part of such a vibrant and inclusive community event. π§‘
It felt especially timely and poignant that Kelham Pride took place on during . Many people seeking sanctuary are also part of LGBTQIA+ communities and face multiple forms of discrimination while seeking safety, dignity and belonging.
In today's hostile climate, feels more important than ever. We know that far-right rhetoric and dehumanisation target both LGBTQIA+ communities and people seeking sanctuary. That's why events like Kelham Pride matter. They remind us of the power of community, solidarity and collective action, and that our struggles for dignity and justice are deeply connected. βπΌ

Following a wonderful afternoon at the Bishop of Sheffield's Garden Party last weekend, we're delighted to share this BRF Ministries Short Conversations podcast featuring our Patron, Bishop Pete Wilcox.
He discusses his new book, 'Come for Refuge: The Book of Ruth and Hope for Migrants'. Through a fresh reading of this well-known story of Ruth, he invites us to think about how we welcome people seeking safety and what stronger, more inclusive communities can look like.π¬
A huge thank you to Bishop Pete and Cathy for their continued support of ASSIST. Also, to everyone who attended the Garden Party, stopped by to say hello, kindly donated, and showed their solidarity with people seeking sanctuary. It was a fantastic community event and a real celebration of welcome and compassion. π§‘

This , we want to say a huge thank you to Howells Solicitors for kindly donating 14 good-quality mobile phones to our clients!π±π§‘
For people seeking asylum, forced into destitution and living without access to government support. A mobile phone is literally a lifeline. It means staying in touch with legal representatives, GPs and other healthcare services, accessing vital information, connecting with community networks, and speaking to loved ones thousands of miles away. ππ
A text message. A WhatsApp call. A video chat with family you haven't seen in years. These moments are life-changing. During times of uncertainty and isolation, phones help people stay connected, informed, and part of a community.
So thank you to everyone at Howells Solicitors for this thoughtful and practical act of solidarity. ππΌ

7 Weeks to Go: Donate, Join, Share! π’
On 28th July, Eve and Jake will be walking 5 marathons in 5 days (130 miles) across the picturesque Peak District, starting and ending in Sheffield.
Together, we are aiming to raise Β£12,000 to recover the costs that ASSIST Sheffield fronted to repatriate academic and organiser Dr Pious Nyandoro to Zimbabwe, his home country. We've already received more than Β£1,000 in donations, and we're incredibly grateful to everyone who has contributed and supported the challenge so far. πβ°οΈ
The challenge will cover the essential costs of laying comrade Pious to rest, nearly one year after his passing on 10th August. Pious lost his life following a mental health crisis after waiting 20 years for a decision on his asylum claim in the UK's brutal Hostile Environment immigration system.
All funds raised will replenish the money used for Pious' repatriation, commission an art memory mural, and strengthen the capacity of VVIDY - Voice of Voiceless Immigration Detainees Yorkshire, an organisation that Pious co-founded. π¨π€πΌ
With beginning next week, we're also embracing the of and . As we walk, we'll be reflecting on Pious' legacy, building connections and creating space for conversation. ποΈ π¬
