After 11 years, Curzon Sheffield has confirmed it will close at the end of this month, with its final screenings taking place this weekend.

For many people it's been the place for first dates, family trips, independent films and movie nights with friends.

🌞 GOOD MORNING SHEFFIELD! Happy Thursday 25th June!

It's another warm morning across the Steel City, and there's plenty happening as we head towards the weekend.

🎬 Sheffield is preparing to say goodbye to one of its best-loved independent cinemas. Curzon Sheffield has confirmed it will close at the end of the month after 11 years, with its final screenings taking place this weekend. Many film lovers are planning one last visit before the lights go down for good.

🚨 South Yorkshire Police have released CCTV images after a man suffered serious injuries during an incident at The Bankers Draft near Castle Square. Officers are continuing to appeal for information as their investigation continues.

🚋 If you're planning to use the Supertram this weekend, check before you travel. Replacement buses will operate on part of the Blue Route while major engineering work takes place as part of the £110 million network upgrade.

🔥 Fire investigators believe the large overnight blaze at allotments on Wardsend Road North was started deliberately after five fire crews tackled the fire during the early hours.

🎙️ The Crossed Wires Podcast Festival returns next week with its biggest line-up yet, bringing Greg James, Zoe Ball, Jo Whiley, Danny Robins and many more to venues across Sheffield.

💪 The BBC has confirmed Gladiators will return to Sheffield's Utilita Arena for another series in 2027, with applications now open for free audience tickets.

🧱 Great news for local jobs too, as Sheffield company earth4Earth has opened the UK's first factory producing low-carbon bricks made from recycled construction soil.

🎡 After entertaining generations of Sheffield families, the much-loved Pullins fairground attractions at Endcliffe Park are set to leave, marking the end of an era for many local families.

☕ Meadowhall has welcomed another new business, with speciality coffee brand Vyve opening its doors, offering coffees, matcha, açaí bowls and protein shakes.

Sheffield Wednesday continue to strengthen under their new ownership, with reports linking the Owls to Aston Villa defender Sil Swinkels.

Meanwhile, Sheffield United continue preparations for the new Championship season, while the city also looks forward to hosting the International Powerlifting Championships later this year.

🥵 SHEFFIELD... HOW MUCH SLEEP DID YOU GET LAST NIGHT?!

After one of the warmest nights of the year so far, Sheffield is waking up to another scorching day, with temperatures expected to climb into the mid-30s this afternoon.

Fans have been working overtime, windows have been wide open, and many of us are probably starting the day feeling like we've already done a full shift!

☀️ HEAT ALERT REMAINS IN PLACE

An Amber Heat Health Alert remains in force across South Yorkshire.

Schools across Sheffield and the wider region are putting measures in place to help children cope with the heat, including relaxed uniform rules, encouraging PE kits, additional water breaks and increased access to shaded areas.

Health officials are urging people to stay hydrated, avoid the hottest part of the day where possible and check in on elderly relatives, neighbours and vulnerable friends.

🔥 OVERNIGHT FIRE VISIBLE ACROSS NORTH SHEFFIELD

A large overnight fire near Leppings Lane and Clay Wheels Lane sent flames and thick black smoke high into the sky, with residents in Walkley, Hillsborough and surrounding areas reporting seeing the blaze overnight.

Emergency services attended the scene and further details are expected from South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue today.

🎬 CURZON SHEFFIELD TO CLOSE

Curzon Sheffield has announced it will close after 11 years, citing declining visitor numbers.

The independent cinema has become a much-loved part of Sheffield's cultural scene, and film fans have been sharing their favourite memories online following the announcement.

🎡 ENDCLIFFE PARK FAIRGROUND TO LEAVE AFTER 40 YEARS

A Sheffield institution is preparing to leave Endcliffe Park.

Jon Pullin's Amusements, an eighth-generation family fairground business, has confirmed it will lose its licence later this year after more than four decades operating in the park.

The family has thanked generations of Sheffield families for their support, while Sheffield City Council says a new agreement will help generate additional income for maintaining the park.

South Yorkshire could one day play host to Olympic and Paralympic events after Mayor Oliver Coppard hosted discussions around a possible northern bid.

🚔 POLICE INVESTIGATIONS CONTINUE

Police are appealing for witnesses after a man suffered potentially life-changing injuries following an alleged assault at The Banker's Draft in Sheffield city centre.

Meanwhile, detectives continue to investigate the death of a man found at the former TGI Fridays site near Meadowhall. Two women previously arrested on suspicion of murder have now been released without further action.

🚨 FIREARM DISCOVERED IN CROOKES

Two people have been arrested after police discovered a firearm at a property in Crookes.

Officers became suspicious after spotting a group acting unusually, leading to searches which uncovered the weapon.

One man remains in custody while enquiries continue.

🔴 Sheffield United youngster Lamine Sidibe is reportedly attracting interest from clubs across Europe, including French side AS Monaco.

The 18-year-old midfielder is regarded as one of the brightest prospects to emerge from the Blades academy in recent years.

🏛️ ARTS TOWER TURNS 60

The University of Sheffield's iconic Arts Tower and its famous paternoster lift are celebrating their 60th anniversary.

It's still one of the city's most recognisable landmarks and one of only a handful of moving paternoster lifts still operating in the UK.

HOT WEATHER AND SCHOOLS

With temperatures set to climb across South Yorkshire this week, schools are putting plans in place to help pupils stay comfortable and safe.

At PGS, students will be encouraged to attend school in either their PE kit or normal uniform from tomorrow through to the end of the day on Friday as the hot weather continues.

Many schools may also be reminding pupils to bring water bottles, stay hydrated and take advantage of shaded areas during breaks.

Three Sheffield brothers have been sentenced for a series of sexual offences committed between 2004 and 2008 following a National Crime Agency investigation.

Meanwhile, the man responsible for the 32-hour Sheffield city centre siege has been found guilty of multiple offences after falsely claiming to have weapons and explosives, causing major disruption across the city centre.

Police are appealing for witnesses after a man in his 30s suffered potentially life-changing injuries following an alleged assault at The Banker's Draft in Sheffield city centre on Sunday evening.

Anyone with information is being asked to contact South Yorkshire Police.

🗑️ BIN BAG COMPLAINTS SPARK INVESTIGATION

A Sheffield councillor has raised concerns after hundreds of bin bags were reportedly left outside a council depot, attracting rats and creating what has been described as a "diabolical smell".

Public health officials are now investigating.

Meadowhall has announced the arrival of Pop Mart, bringing the hugely popular Labubu collectables to South Yorkshire for the first time.
