🌍 Expression du mois 🌍
This month, we’re travelling to Belgium for a wonderfully funny expression: “Ça plèque !”
Meaning: “It’s sticky!”
You might hear it when talking about melting ice cream, sticky fingers, spilled juice on the table…or even children covered in chocolate after snack time 😅
Belgian French is full of charming expressions and little language surprises that make the Francophone world so rich and colourful
Have you ever heard this expression before?
Or do you know another funny word or expression from Belgium?

😂🇫🇷 Ever noticed that some “English” words used in French… aren’t actually English at all?
This funny video highlights some classic Franglais moments 👇
Baby-foot = Foosball
Talkie-walkie = Walkie-talkie
Relooking = Restyle / Makeover
Pom-pom girl = Cheerleader
Play-back = Lip-syncing
Mail = Email
Baskets = Sneakers
Flipper = Pinball machine
Planning = Agenda / Schedule
Languages love borrowing words from each other… and sometimes they get a little creative along the way 😄
Which one surprised you the most?
Or do you know any other funny “fake English” words used in French?

👨👩👧👦 Raising multilingual children in a mixed-language family can be incredibly rewarding… but also challenging at times.
We’re sharing this very insightful article: “Raising Multilingual Children in Mixed-Language Families: Why Partner Support Matters”
One of the key messages?
Maintaining a heritage language is not just the responsibility of the parent who speaks it.
Support, encouragement, and open conversations between parents make a huge difference in helping children grow up confidently bilingual or multilingual.
The article also reminds us that:
- Every language carries identity, culture, and connection
- Bilingualism is a long-term journey, not a race
- Feeling supported as a parent matters too
A beautiful and reassuring read for multilingual families navigating everyday language choices at home.

Expression du Mois – Mai
This month, we’re heading to Congo to discover a surprising French expression:
😲 “Manger quelqu’un” 🍽️
Literal translation: “To eat someone”
Don’t worry… no one is actually on the menu! 😄
French, especially across different countries, is full of vivid and imaginative expressions that reflect culture, humor, and everyday life. This one means winning against someone in a game or competition!

🧠 Does the language we speak shape the way we think?
We’re sharing this fascinating TED talk by Lera Boroditsky: “How language shapes the way we think”
Did you know that:
- Some communities don’t use “left” and “right” but only cardinal directions (north, south, east, west)?
- Russian speakers distinguish between different shades of blue more quickly because of their language?
- The way we describe events can even influence how we assign blame and responsibility?
With around 7,000 languages spoken in the world, each one offers a unique way of seeing and understanding reality.
💡 Key takeaway:
- Language is not just a tool for communication
- It actually shapes how we perceive, remember, and think
At a time when many languages are disappearing, this talk is a powerful reminder of the richness of linguistic diversity… and why learning languages matters more than ever!
