Wentbridge Viaduct, a grade II listed structure, carries more than 86,000 vehicles per day on the A1T across the Went Valley. The project to refurbish the carriageway and ensure structural integrity on this vital piece of infrastructure encountered significant changes and variations.
As National Highways principal contractor, under the Scheme Delivery Framework, Octavius successfully overcame these challenges, giving the iconic structure a new lease of life.

Demolishing and replacing the central pier of a concrete road bridge spanning the A1 at Wentedge, plus enhancing drainage and impact protection for the abutments. That was our original scope.
Adding to the complexity of this already challenging project was a staggered design regime, with design packages delivered in separate phases over the project’s lifespan
As National Highways’ principal contractor, under the Scheme Delivery Framework, Octavius rose to the task, successfully ensuring the structure’s integrity and extending the asset’s life.

Fully integrated, regionally focussed, delivered by partners who believe in - and live by – their community values. These are the transport infrastructure priorities we heard from combined authorities across the country gathered at 2026.
Regardless of region or political stripe the message from metro mayors was loud and clear, as they addressed potential partners to support growth and regeneration, using enhanced transport infrastructure as a principal enabler. Lucy Prior MBE MSc Prior, Octavius’ Business Development Lead for Rail shares these and other insights from the event, visit our website to read the article 👉https://www.octavius.co.uk/industry-info/better-connected-fully-integrated-regionally-led-transport-priorities-to-the-fore-at-ukreiif/ or contact our UKREiiiF participants:

🚉 South Gloucestershire village Charfield has been without access to the railway for 60 years. Octavius is helping rectify that, as lead contractor on the project to build the village’s new station.
The new platforms have step-free access, the new station is integrated into the local transport network. New employment and commercial opportunities have been generated by the project for the local community.
With the footbridge steelwork installed and platform progress on track, villagers should be catching trains to Bristol and Gloucester by early next summer. 🏠Housing development has always been closely synchronised with the planning of new transport infrastructure.
But the nature of that infrastructure is changing, with the need for increased resilience, sustainability and accessibility demanding increasingly sophisticated solutions. Surface access to new developments via road will always be part of the equation but many major housing projects are now giving as much – or even greater – precedence to multi-modal connectivity via a combination of road with integrated light rail, guided busways, walking and cycle provision.
Who’s driving this change? What kind of infrastructure do they envisage?

With some projects it feels like the stars are aligned. Pretty much everything goes ahead as planned and when challenges arise they are overcome, without friction, by allowing common purpose to guide the solution.
Delivering the first phase of the A1331 Link Road for Essex County Council was one of those projects.
But luck was not a factor, forging close alignment between customer, principal contractor, community and supply chain was central to success; and something that can potentially be extended into the project’s second phase.

We're working towards a key milestone on the A376 Dinan Way extension project.
Read more about the project 👇
Temporary traffic lights which have been in place for the construction of the Dinan Way extension, will be cleared from the A376 on Friday 29 May to help ease traffic flow in and out of Exmouth during the summer.
The new Dinan Way extension will then open for use in September, with traffic being diverted onto the new road while construction of the new roundabout on the A376 is carried out.
