My buddy DJ REX, a former Agincourt Rock DJ passed away this weekend. Everyone who knew him is totally gutted and there's some really touching tributes to him online. He was SO well loved. I'd known him for decades. I was working at the Electric ballroom in Camden in the 90's when they offered me a job as DJ at their flagship Rock night 'Sin City'. I turned it down to spend time with my girlfriend but said 'I know a Rock DJ who's free...' Under Rex, Sin City went HUGE becoming London's main Rock club with record deals and gigs in New York etc whilst at my end my girlfriend dumped me 2 months later. (Not Bitter!!)
We've always stayed in constant touch but when the clubs owners changed and the awesome Ballroom manager Brian, passed away, Rex had some tough times and I was SO pleased when he got the weekend Rock nights at the Purple Turtle in Reading. In spite of sometimes running competing nights we never had a bad word between us (grumpy looks maybe) and ALWAYS total respect. He was a damn good DJ and one of the rare ones who actually kept one eye on the dancefloor to make sure it was full which (aspiring DJ's take note) is the actual job. Every time I went to the Turtle it was RAMMED. He knew what he was doing alright.
The last time I saw Rex a few months back we talked/ bi***ed for 2-3 hours constant about DJing and music ( he HATED Oasis) laughing at stupid memories, and complained about drunk entitled customers. He said we were like the 2 old men in the balcony in the Muppets. We were making plans to meet up soon so we could talk some more as he was writing a book about DJing.
I still can't believe he's gone. I keep expecting it to be a social media hoax. There's a Rex sized hole in the universe that can't be filled. I want to give him a hug but he'd hit me and tell me not to be so soft. Miss ya loads mate.
