๐ŸŒพโœจ Dia da Espiga (Corpus Christi) โœจ๐ŸŒพ

๐Ÿ™ According to Catholic tradition, on Ascension Thursday (this year, 14 May), Jesus Christ ascended into heaven 40 days after the Resurrection (Easter). In Portugal ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡น, this day celebrates both this religious event and the arrival of spring ๐ŸŒผ๐ŸŒฟ.

๐ŸŒž More than a religious celebration, it is an ancient ritual deeply connected to nature, the land, and the cycles of life ๐ŸŒฑ๐ŸŒ.

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ Families traditionally spend the day outdoors, enjoying walks through the countryside ๐Ÿšถโ€โ™€๏ธ๐ŸŒณ, sharing picnics ๐Ÿงบ, and creating the traditional Ear of Corn Bouquet ๐ŸŒพ๐Ÿ’.

โœจ The bouquet is made of:
๐ŸŒพ Ears of wheat
๐ŸŒบ Poppies
๐ŸŒผ Marigolds
๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ Olive branches
๐ŸŒฟ Rosemary
๐Ÿ‡ Vine leaves

๐Ÿšช It is placed behind the front door and kept for a year as a symbol of good luck, prosperity, health, and protection for the home ๐Ÿกโœจ.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ This tradition is believed to have roots in ancient Celtic and Roman harvest celebrations, where people gave thanks for the first crops of the year ๐ŸŒพโ˜€๏ธ. Later, Christianity incorporated the custom into the Feast of the Ascension โœ๏ธ.

๐Ÿ“œ A traditional Portuguese saying reminds us:

๐ŸŒพ "Whoever has Ascension wheat will have bread every year." ๐Ÿž

Each plant in the bouquet carries a special meaning:

๐ŸŒพ Ears of corn โ€“ Bread, sustenance & fertility
๐ŸŒบ Poppy โ€“ Love & life โค๏ธ
๐ŸŒผ Marigold โ€“ Wealth & prosperity ๐Ÿ’ฐ
๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ Olive tree โ€“ Peace & divine light โœจ
๐ŸŒฟ Rosemary โ€“ Health, strength & resilience ๐Ÿ’ช
๐Ÿ‡ Vine โ€“ Wine & joy ๐Ÿท๐Ÿ˜Š

๐Ÿ’š A beautiful Portuguese tradition where faith, culture, family, and nature come together.

๐Ÿฌ๐ŸŒฐ DOCE FINO DO ALGARVE ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡นโœจ
A Traditional Portuguese Delicacy ๐Ÿฐ

Did you know these beautiful Algarve sweets originated from convent confectionery traditions? โ›ช๐Ÿ’›
Made with finely grated almonds, sugar, and egg whites, these handcrafted treats are shaped into fruits ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿ, flowers ๐ŸŒธ, animals ๐Ÿฆ, and other artistic forms before being carefully painted with food colouring ๐ŸŽจโœจ

๐Ÿฅš The inside is filled with delicious soft eggs, creating a rich and traditional flavour loved across Portugal ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡น

๐ŸŒฟ In the western Algarve, sweets are often shaped like plants and flowers, while the eastern Algarve creates traditional forms such as little cheeses ๐Ÿง€, chestnuts ๐ŸŒฐ, and D. Rodrigos ๐Ÿฎ

Sadly, these sweets are becoming rarer as almond production in the Algarve declines ๐ŸŒณ๐Ÿ’”. Many almond trees have been abandoned over time, making this handmade tradition even more precious.
