My view on what is needed to be an effective coach has changed a lot over the past 5 years. I went through a good few years without really learning much and trying to go it alone, but now I feel a lot more motivated and open to learn and seek help on what I don't know / I'm not quite as experienced in.
Some of these thing are educational, others make my life a lot easier and some are just how I get some nice footage to share on the Internet.
I am not paid nor supported by any people or organisations I've listed, these are for info and hopefully some inspiration for other coaches ๐ค.
Some early 2000s rowing lore for those of you who weren't around for RowTV.
Before HRR broadcast every day RowTV would film every single single race of the regatta, including qualifying. As far as I'm aware this was all done by one man!
Anyway, I've always remembered this race as one of my favourites and thought it would be a shame to be missed as it was in the first round.
I'd love to know a bit more about that year if anyone was at Oxford / Cambridge at the time. Drop me a DM!
Yesterday I used the new .rowing system for the first time with four different scullers.
I'm really enjoying the software so far as it makes looking at a lot of different metrics pretty simple.
I'll post another more in depth update once I've got to grips with it a bit more, but so far it's looking good ๐
Exciting new bit of kit on the market from .rowing. Really like the colour screen and the many different options of what you can look at while you're rowing.
Can't wait to get in on some single Sculls in the next few days ๐ฃ
Sound on for this one ๐
Listen to George sculling on some pan flat water.
What else can you hear that I didn't mention on the checklist?

BTS Weekly round up, busy one recovering from ๐คฎ and then catching up on work / clients.
1 - crazy how much one sentence can stop you in your tracks. I'm so involved in the day to day process of running my business that I rarely allow myself to have any perspective. Feeling very grateful to have the opportunities that are coming my way on a regular basis!
2- Saturday @ Ally Pally
3 - A friend I made in Cafe Nero
4 - Telemetry session and second time working with Chris and Jamie down at Walton. Loved helping them find some speed and bring some direction for their next block of training.
5+6 - first testing with . More details on this to follow!
7 - Filippi + Peach ๐ค
8 - Sammy Virji + Chase and Status
9 - Beautiful morning in Marloe
10 - Mid session with this W4-, where we used telemetry to align some angles between sessions and have more of a focus on boat acceleration / deceleration for some free speed. (and more enjoyable rowing!)
11 - rehab moving in the right direction. Crazy to think it's been 6 months since I last did a heavy back squat ๐ญ. But moving pain free and starting to add load in a lot of different positions. Luckily I've been injured so many times this is a very familiar process...
Onto the next, travelling all over this week for coaching, telemetry, lactate testing and talks / seminars. Busy but I wouldn't have it any other way!
To me, "letting the boat run" implies something passive - that you shouldn't be applying force or energy to the boat at that time.
I prefer to coach a more active approach to the recovery; to have something always moving, either weight shifting forwards or to have the boat being moved more guided underneath you.
Apologies for the error halfway through, the boat is indeed decelerating on the recovery and not the drive (hopefully ๐ ).
Save this one for your next recovery focused session!
Every step to install a telemetry system ready to assess another athlete on the water, looking at:
1๏ธโฃ Power
2๏ธโฃ Total arcs
3๏ธโฃ Effective length
4๏ธโฃ Handle speed
5๏ธโฃ Boat speed
6๏ธโฃ Boat acceleration
7๏ธโฃ Force application
8๏ธโฃ Consistency
9๏ธโฃ Drive / recovery time
๐ Optimal rate for a combination of power, length and boat speed.
As well as ensuring the boat is set up millimeter perfect for every athlete I work with.
Aim to make the end of your drive phase flow as seamlessly into the recovery as you can.
After that, the first part of the recovery is to move yourself ie organise your body parts and move your weight, the second part of the recovery is to move the boat - to keep as many of those organised body parts as still as is necessary to get the boat to travel as far as you can before the next pickup.
I think a conversation about the recovery has to include the end of the drive in it - as with any part of the stroke, one think can't happen without the section before it.
It took me ages to understand how this transition works, but I'm happy to be at the stage I feel like I can explain it in simple terms now!
