The Support in the Right Direction (SiRD) Year 2 Fund Report highlights the impact of independent support delivered between April 2025 and March 2026, sharing key learning and insights, and outlining how people have been supported to understand their rights, navigate complex systems, and access the care they need.

With expertise in Self-Directed Support legislation and a good knowledge of local resources, independent support organisations work with people at every stage of their social care journey. They take a person-centred approach and respond flexibly to individual circumstances, supporting all social care user groups and unpaid carers.

This support includes help to understand the social care system and self-directed support, help to prepare for and participate in social care assessments, and help to plan and manage support. Independent support plays an important part in the delivery of social care and without it, many social care users and carers would struggle to access the support they need and make use of it in the way they would like.

When you visit the SDS Handbook, the Personal Assistant (PA) Employer Handbook, or the PA Handbook, you can now ask 'Clara' anything about Self-Directed Support.

Clara is an Artificial Intelligence service that can share general information and advice about SDS, including signposting to a local Independent Support Organisation or local authority where appropriate. Clara offers quick and accurate responses, based on information contained in over 150 Handbook articles.

Everyone has the right to live independently, connected to the people and communities that matter to them. The ILF Scotland Coming Home Fund launched last month, and we are proud to play an important role in supporting disabled people to live independently.

The ILF Scotland Coming Home Fund aims to help people who have learning disabilities and complex support needs to leave hospitals or inappropriate out of area placements and move back to their communities with the right support.
