Grain Drier Rebuild | Part 1 🏗️

A challenging project for one of our maltster customers, repairing a damaged section of one of their grain driers.

First challenge.. getting it out!

With very little existing information available on the drier, we first had to assess the structure, identify suitable lifting points and develop a safe lifting arrangement for removing the damaged sections.

With each section calculated to weigh up to 6 tonnes, careful planning of the lift and rigging arrangement was essential.

The drier was housed inside the existing building, meaning each section then had to be carefully lifted and manoeuvred out with clearances as tight as just 20mm in places.

An impressive rigging arrangement was developed around a 160-tonne crane supplied by Forsyth of Denny, allowing the sections to be safely removed through the existing building structure

Patterson Engineering was appointed as Principal Contractor for the works under CDM 2015, coordinating the project, contractors and lifting operations from planning through to ex*****on.

The lifting apparatus and associated structural steelwork were designed by Craik, working alongside our team to develop a workable solution for the lift.

And getting it out was only half the job… 👀

Another comprehensive bulk handling asset survey completed for Edrington’s Glenrothes Distillery.

Our engineers were tasked with carrying out detailed condition assessments, collecting asset data and servicing across the site’s malt handling systems, providing valuable information to support future maintenance planning and longer term asset management.

Proactive asset inspections play a key role in improving reliability, planning maintenance effectively, and extending the service life of critical equipment.

We’re proud to continue supporting Glenrothes and look forward to being part of the distillery’s journey for years to come.

Another Cimbria conveyor installed today at a local grain storage site for Simpsons Malt Limited.

With the wider malting and distilling sectors continuing to face challenging market conditions, it’s encouraging to see ongoing investment in modern, efficient grain handling assets.

Not all equipment is new and that’s exactly what makes some of it special.

That’s what we found when we were contacted by a new customer in Campbeltown.

Springbank Distillers wanted to retain their original rotary cleaner as a vintage feature of the distillery tours, but decades of use had started to show on the drum separator and screening section.

After inspecting the machine, we measured up and sourced a replacement mesh screen to suit the existing equipment, then fitted it around production to minimise disruption for the customer.

A great outcome all round in helping preserve a piece of distillery history while keeping the equipment operating as it should.

Another happy new customer for Patterson Engineering ✅

Not a big job, but a proper milestone.

Our apprentice Josh has just delivered one of his own projects, a new fence for Diageo’s iconic Lagavulin Distillery on Islay.

He headed over to the beautiful island of Islay to measure up, organised the materials required, then back in the workshop where he cut, fabricated, and welded the full job prior to galvanising, ready to go back over to the island.

All done without holding his hand.

That’s the standard we’re building at Patterson Engineering, young engineers who can be trusted to get on with it and deliver work to a high standard.

Good job for the client. Big step for Josh.

We’ve just had commissioning of our new Morgan Rushworth CNC plasma system we purchased, supplied to us by RS Machinery Group. This is a key step in our ongoing investment into Patterson Engineering.

This machine has been heavily specified, including a VWI gas console, allowing us to achieve HD cut quality across a wide range of materials. We particularly required this for stainless as we often work with this metal.

As part of a six figure investment programme, this upgrade strengthens our capability to deliver precision fabrication and expands the services we can offer our customers.

We’ll soon be providing high-definition profiling and etching on:
